Share your Art on the Rocks & Potter release photos with us!

We tried to do this last month for Art on the Rocks, but realized that we didn’t exactly send it out in timely fashion (not that we’re that much earlier this time).

We just want to help you share your photos from Art on the Rocks as well as the various Harry Potter release parties planned for tonight. Rather than write the guidelines over again, we figured we’d just have you go to our last post about it and look at them there.

The only difference for the Harry Potter images is that we want you to use the tag hpotterbham07 with bhamterminal.

That’s it. We’re looking forward to seeing what might come in (and to letting you know about another way to submit photos in the near future).

Thanks.

There’s still time to Get Downtown!

Get Downtown! Birmingham begins this evening beginning at 5 p.m. The street festival’s proceeds will benefit efforts to restore the historic Lyric Theatre. The theatre is located across from the site of the event, the property surrounding McWane Science Center.

It will take place on the third Thursday of every month until October.

[NOTE: For the event, 19th Street North between 2nd and 3rd Avenues North will be closed to accomodate attendees.]

This month’s lineup includes:

Performers Time
Josephine Sweet 5 – 5:30 p.m.
Frankie Velvet & The Mighty Veltones 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.
Harold & Jim 6:30 – 7 p.m.
The Charlie Soul Band 7 – 8 p.m.

From the Stationmaster: Subscribe via RSS or email, new editorial

For those that already subscribe to The Terminal’s main feed, visiting the site’s front page and clicking on the subscribe link in the menu will now take you to a page that contains links to all available RSS feeds for the different sections of the site and allow readers to sign up to receive updates from the site via email.

[NOTE: The email subscription that you are signing up for is completely different from the email newsletter that we are planning to launch next month. Stay tuned for updates regarding that]

We figured it would be extremely helpful as we prepare to ramp up these other sections of the site that you have immediate access to them, though our Newsstand will always provide timely updates on what’s going on all over The Terminal. More after the jump:

Watch your speed!

Especially if you’re planning on driving through Malfunction Junction anytime soon. Governor Riley has assigned six more troopers to the state’s busiest interstate interchange (connecting I-20/59 with I-65) to enforce the speed reduction from 60 m.p.h. to 50 m.p.h.

According to information obtained for this report, more than 3,900 tickets have been written since the speed reduction was implemented in late March. Motorists complying with the speed limit change have been left in the dust by those that still disregard it.

There is no word as to if or when the increased patrols would end.

Writers interest meeting tomorrow night

As we continue to grow over here at The Terminal, we’re always looking for more writers to help us cover as much of Birmingham as possible. We’ll be having a meeting for those of you that are interested in writing for the site tomorrow evening starting around 5:45 p.m. at Speakeasy 1920 (1920 3rd Avenue North).

There are several stories that need to be covered in the coming weeks and if you’re willing to write for the fun of it (at least for right now), please feel free to join us. If you can’t and are still interested, please contact us however you see fit.

Helena makes Money’s list of best places to live

Helena was selected as #91 of 100 communities that made Money Magazine’s 2007 list of the Best Places to Live. The magazine released this year’s rankings recently and Helena was the only city in Alabama to make the list.

The annual report looks at cities with populations between 7,500 and 50,000. The Birmingham News spoke with Helena’s mayor and provides an overview of the criteria for the honor.

Congrats!

It’s National Hot Dog Day!

It’s actually the 50th anniversary of National Hot Dog Day, introduced to us by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in 1957. According to their official website (yes, we’re serious), more than 2.3 billion franks will be eaten this July, which is actually National Hot Dog Month.

We here in Birmingham are pretty picky about our hot dogs, whether it’s the "special sauce" or the Grapico or Coke that goes along with our dogs.

Where’s your favorite place to go grab a hot dog (or 3) and why?
