Magic City Question: a section reborn

So here’s the simple version. We’re re-branding – sort of.

It’s our intention to keep our main tag line of Birmingham’s hub for information, especially as we introduce a few more things into the mix over the next few weeks. What we will be doing is refocusing on what makes using the blog format so much fun – encouraging the conversation.

As promised on Friday, we figured it was time to reconfigure the Magic City Question into its own section. Click here to learn more about it.

Birmingham sixth “most dangerous” city, again

It’s the second year in a row that the city has received this dubious distinction from CQ Press, a private publishing company. The results and methodology has already been questioned by the FBI and the American Society of Criminology. Here’s how it’s being reported in the city unfortunately listed as #1 – Detroit, Michigan – complete with the concerns of the folks mentioned in that last sentence.

While the organization informed media outlets that the information would be formally released on Monday morning, there are already several reports online about rankings, including one from the Birmingham News, reporting the results, causing the blogosphere and the web to be abuzz, getting traffic equal to that of the folks doing follow-ups about this year’s American Music Awards winners.

Considering it’s after midnight (on the East coast), we figured that they wouldn’t mind if we provided a link to the report for you to look over prior to The News’ report on the findings in today’s paper.

Random Shots: What are you thankful for?

Sixteenth Street/ First Church joint dinner

That was the question being asked by congregates of Sixteenth Street Baptist Church and First United Methodist Church earlier this evening. The two church families gathered at Sixteenth Street for a joint Thanksgiving service.

This was the third year that the two downtown houses of worship gathered together. The congregations take turns visiting each other’s facilities, with the minister from the other church delivering the sermon. This year Rev. John Rutland of First United Methodist Church had the honors.

The image above was taken during the joint Thanksgiving dinner held after the service.
