A look back: This day in Birmingham history

Here’s the first of what we hope will be a recurring series looking back at Birmingham’s history. Enjoy!

August 17 in Birmingham history:

1817: William H. Morris, a founder of the city of Avondale and the third mayor of Birmingham, was born in Troup County, Georgia.
1933: MLB 3rd baseman Jim Davenport, a star for the San Francisco Giants and the namesake of Jim Davenport’s Pizza Palace, was born in Siluria.
1942: Harold Ruttenberg, founder of “Just for Feet” and later the owner of the Copper Grill at Brookwood Village and Crepes Egg-setera at the Summit, was born in Johannesburg, South Africa.

From the Stationmaster: OK folks, some options for your Friday

We figured you’re wondering “Just what’s going on over there?”

Well…

we’ve just posted Terri Dann’s debut story on The Terminal about tomorrow evening’s Hand In Paw event (it took longer to post than we thought it would). Now if we can just make sure we can get her name into the backend of this thing…

We’ve also been reminded about The Spots’ live recording session at Speakeasy tonight, we’re doing a test run of This Day in Birmingham history in about 90 minutes, we’ve just secured additional door prizes for the launch party (they’ll be up this afternoon on the event’s info page) and…

We’re feeling a little hungry, so we’re going to hang out at Matthew’s Bar and Grill (quick blurb here) this evening starting about 5:30 p.m. (probably earlier, but its safe to say 5:30 p.m.)

If you feel like coming on down and picking our editor’s brain, go ahead and do it. (No, they don’t have their liquor license yet, but you know, it’s pretty hot anyway and some water or tea may just be the thing to hit the spot).

The Spots live recording, Speakeasy 1920

Yeah, you’ll feel guilty if you don’t go. At least you’ll want to feel guilty if you don’t go. This evening’s event will feature the much anticipated recording and filming of The Spots at Speakeasy. All you really need to know is that it’s a chance to drink Guinness on tap and listen to a good band do a live recording.

Cost: $5

The Terminal Lanch Party/Happy Hour for a Cause 2, The Bottletree

Yeah, we’re finally having a launch party. We know it’s about time; we also know that you don’t want to miss it. We’ll be celebrating six months as the newest hub for information in Birmingham while raising monies and awareness for two worthy causes at The Bottletree.

What more do you need?

Breaking News: Water main break delays ASC Social Club event

Apparently this morning’s huge water main break at UAB is causing issues for the Alys Stephens Center. They don’t have water, meaning no bathrooms or air conditioning. As a result they’ve rescheduled tonight’s ASC Social Club Goes Bollywood event for Wednesday, August 29th from 6 to 8 p.m.

So if you’re not planning to join us for our launch party/fundraiser that evening, please consider heading over to the ASC for bellydancers, great food, Bollywood movies, cold drinks, and fun people – plus water, bathrooms, and air conditioning!

Seems that everything old is new again

We’re thinking about switching all of our “quirky” tagged stories to “interesting” and this one is a prime example of why. New_Nikon_Addict’s photostream on Flickr includes an image of a 1952 Jet magazine article talking about the “burying” of sin here in Birmingham. Sound familiar? It should since it was just used again recently in Detroit, MI by the NAACP.

The Velvet Teddy Bear signs on for entertainment district

Ruben Studdard - Bob Farley/f8photoJust when people were beginning to wonder just how serious the development talk surrounding the new entertainment district adjacent to the BJCC currently was, The Birmingham News reports that Ruben Studdard has signed on to open a nightclub with Perfroma Entertainment Real Estate.

Reporter Dawn Kent’s brief also included a mention of efforts to get Taylor Hicks to commit to a similar venture for the development. It’s already peaking interest among members of the Soul Patrol across the country.
