Saturday, the ALS Association of Alabama is sponsoring its second annual fundraising event “Walk to D’Feet ALS” at Samford University’s Seibert Stadium. Registration begins at 9 a.m. with the walk starting at 10. Registration is also available online. There is no fee to walk but you’ll need to get some sponsors behind you. Last year, the Birmingham event raised more than $65,000. Walks are also held in Tuscaloosa and Huntsville. More than $170,000 was raised statewide in 2006. This year’s statewide goal is $245,000. They can’t do it without you so families, groups and individuals are all invited to participate. The walk route is wheelchair and stroller accessible. If you can’t make it, you can still participate by donating. The ALS Association (ALSA) Alabama Chapter’s walk is part of a national effort in support of local patient services and nationally directed research. A progressive neurodegenerative disease sometimes known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, ALS strikes more than 5,000 people in the United States each year. For more information, e-mail walk@ALSAlabama.org or call 1-800-664-1242.

The long goodbye to The Birmingham News’ former home continues.
This is an image taken earlier today as we learned that the first above street level demolition of the 1917 headquarters was visible.
Crews have been working in recent weeks to remove the sidewalk and dirt from around the foundation of the building, which is being demolished to make way for a surface parking lot. It is unknown when the structure will be completely removed, though based on current progress it could be as soon as the end of the month.

Travelogue: The other Patrick Cooper
Screenshot of Evanston, Illinois’ Patrick Cooper’s website.
Well, he’s finding the whole situation quite interesting. The Patrick Cooper in Virginia that is. He was the one that came up first when you would look up the name of the former Birmingham mayoral candidate and current contester of the election during the early days of his campaign to get into City Hall.
This Patrick Cooper decided that he would begin to track the happenings of the man who shared his name on his site after he was not listed in the top spot.

So what’s this new section?
Screenshot of The Rumble.
I was actually surprised when I was stopped several times over the weekend and asked just what this new section I hinted at was going to be. Well, it’s live as of right now and it’s called The Rumble.
There’s a method to the madness here, so you can either go on over and start using it OR you can read on after the jump and get some crazy explanation about why we’re doing it.
