2007 Drought: What’s up at the zoo?

So it’s still hot… and it’s not going away anytime soon, with today’s high reaching 103°. We know how we’re fairing in the heat, but how about the residents at one of the state’s busiest tourist destinations.

The folks at Fox 6 decided over the weekend let us know how the gang at the Birmingham Zoo was beating this insane heat recently, complete with video. We’d just love to have access to that pool right now.

Red Mountain Park draft master plan revealed tomorrow

We were hoping to get up a special section about the three parks initiative before any more announcements were made. The guys at Red Mountain Park decided to put a wrench in that plan (albeit a welcome one).

They’ve planned a public presentation of their Final Draft Master Plan by the park’s designers, Wallace, Roberts & Todd, to the park’s commission at 3 p.m. at Vulcan Park.

Ronald McDonald House Charity Poker Tournament, B&A Warehouse

The Ronald McDonald House of Central Alabama will be holding this fundraiser on July 17, beginning at 6p.m. at B&A Warehouse. The buy-in is $60 and it gives you the chance to win several prizes including

  • Restaurant gift certificates
  • 2 tickets to Barber Motorsports Rolex Classic

Zoo announces free day for race participants

The Birmingham Zoo has determined that this year’s Run for the Animals cannot be rescheduled due to scheduling conflicts. They have announced that those that were to participate in the race will now be able to enjoy a Free Day at the Zoo this coming Sunday, June 10. Continue reading

UPDATE: Zoo announces Free Day for race participants June 10 

Attention all runners! Make your way to the Birmingham Zoo on May 11 as Food World presents the 2nd Annual Zoo Run: Stampeding for Wild Elephants. This fun night will feature a 5K run and kids’ fun run.

Zoo Run logoAll proceeds will benefit the International Elephant Foundation. More than $10,000 was raised last year and race organizers hope to surpass that total this year! Full Moon Bar-B-Que’s Post Race Party will take place after all races. According to the site, there are new courses and new prizes. Click here to register for the event online or go by the zoo.
