“Let’s Scare Jessica to Death”, Rojo

Part of the Steak Verhoeven Film Club’s ongoing series at Rojo in Highland Park, this film helps us all celebrate Halloween in that deeply psychological way that makes all the sense in the world (sort of). Here’s the description of the 1971 film courtesy of the email announcing the event:

A woman released from a mental hospital moves to an old countryside house with her husband and a friend to recuperate, but begins having strange visions and experiences around the property. Is there really something strange happening, or is it all in her in mind?

Rojo has promised Halloween shooters, candy and caramel apples. It’s just one of several options to entertain yourselves on Halloween night. You could also always check out the film’s fansite.

UPDATED Travelogue: Go to the Classic Parade, get ice cream?

It’s a pretty good deal if you ask me. The folks at Mayfield Ice Cream had spelt spell it out in this blog post on their website (currently cached by Google). They figured that since you can’t throw candy from the floats during the annual Magic City Classic parade, the next best thing would be to hand out free 4 oz. cups of vanilla ice cream.

The weird thing is that a current search of the company’s new blog shows no sign of this post existing. NOTE: Here is the link to the new version of the post, made at 3:43 p.m. local time on October 15. The post has also shown shows a lot of love to the Magic City Classic itself, scheduled to take place next week Saturday, October 27 at historic Legion Field between Alabama A&M and Alabama State.

For those not familiar with the Magic City Classic… well, you’ve just got to see it for yourselves, an experience that can’t be missed. Click here to view their offficial site and here to find out where you need to be standing if they do in fact go ahead with for the free ice cream plan.

The Innocents & Mayoral results party, Rojo

Rojo’s offering anyone who voted for mayor free chips and salsa! The guys from Steak Verhoeven will also be showing The Innocents (1961) starring Deborah Kerr, directed by Jack Clayton, in the side room beginning at 7:30 p.m.

From the email announcing tomorrow’s movie:

In late 19th century England, an inexperienced young woman (Kerr) becomes governess to a small orphan girl living in a lonely stately home occupied only by the child, a housekeeper and a small complement of servants. Her initial misgivings allayed by the child’s angelic nature, her anxieties are once more aroused when the girl’s brother, equally captivating, is sent home from boarding school for wickedness of some unspecified kind…

City’s 64th homicide in Glen Iris

Birmingham’s 64th homicide of the year has been confirmed. The story has been developing since early this morning, with most of the major news outlets following it. All of the mainstream media outlets are reporting that the 20-year old UAB student was found this morning in the parking lot adjacent to Glen Iris Elementary School shot to death. Here is the account on the Birmingham News breaking news blog.

The recent surge of crime was the focus of the current issue of Black & White (available on newsstands through the 17th). Claims that our crime numbers are down are true, but the difference between the old numbers and the current numbers can be considered disturbing. It’s also been disturbing to read what some people are saying as a result of this most recent tragedy. (UPDATE: 1:57 a.m.; comments have been removed from the post.) What are your thoughts?

Does God exist? Hear two sides next week Wednesday

That’s when John Lennox will debate Richard Dawkins at the Alys Stephens Center. While information has been out in public for weeks, we’ve noticed a recent upswing in the online buzz about the event. It’s being sponsored by the Fixed Point Foundation, a Birmingham-based Christian “think-tank” organization.

Dawkins is a respected intellectual and known atheist while John Lennox is a Christian apologist and scientist. Both gentlemen work in Oxford,England; Lennox is Reader in Mathematics and Fellow in Mathematics and Philosophy of Science, Green College, University of Oxford while Dawkins is Fellow of the Royal Society and Charles Simonyi Chair for the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University. So basically, it’s going to be a good one. Click on over to Good News to learn more about the event from its original press release.

Lennox has been interviewed on WBHM – click here to listen to or read the conversation.
