inForum 2007: “A good start…”

the crowd at inForum 2007, 6.28.2007

More than 100 people attended last night’s inForum event held at the Birmingham Museum of Art and presented by the Birmingham City Council. The purpose of the event was to expose the citizens of the city to all of the opportunities available to serve as appointees on city boards and agencies.

It was also an opportunity to honor those long-serving appointees and listen to Robert Holmes, senior vice president of ethics and corporate concerns for Alabama Power deliver a powerful message encouraging people to serve their city and their community. Continue reading

Two YP events tonight; check them both out

Coming on the heels of last week’s YP Expo, there are two events going on in Birmingham’s city center this evening that are both demonstrating the interest and power of this ever emerging group of future leaders:

The YP Birmingham event is described in this Timetable post and it begins at 6 p.m.

The second event is inFORUM 2007 at the Birmingham Museum of Art. That event begins at 5 p.m., so you can actually do both this evening if you wanted. This event is the first ever celebration of boards and agency service, and introduction to civic participation for young citizens. The city is making an effort to encourage those under 30 to take a look at applying the the agencies as it was recently discovered that the group was severely underrepresented on these boards and agencies. It is an excellent way to demonstrate the unspoken message from last week’s event; that the current group of YPs are ready for their place at the table.

Maybe not the future, but it definitely says something about how we get our news nowadays. Maybe we could do that someday ourselves . Continue reading
