The mayor’s right hand man is stepping aside

Al Herbert has served as the right hand man for Mayor Bernard Kincaid for all of his eight years in office. Yesterday, it was revealed that if Kincaid is elected to serve for a third term, he will not be by his side. Herbert’s departure was announced during yesterday’s weekly Birmingham City Council meeting. He will begin working at UAB as their executive director of supplier diversity effective October 15.

Our current poll question asks you if Herbert’s departure means anything in terms of the mayor’s (as of yet unannounced) chances of reelection.

Regions Plaza to become Marriott Renaissance Hotel

Birmingham’s Harbert Realty Services announced today that the conversion of the 17-story Regions Plaza at 5th Avenue North and 20th Street in downtown Birmingham will be branded as a 225-room Marriott Renaissance hotel. We posted about the plans for the 4-diamond facility when they were announced in April.

The formal announcement comes after word that the $50 million project may receive city support in the form of $2.7 million in tax breaks and infrastructure improvements according to today’s Birmingham News Breaking News blog.

The library is looking for Alabama authors

The Birmingham Public Library is in the early stages of planning its second annual Local Authors Expo. This year’s expo will be held on November 30 and December 1. The event’s official site has information from last year’s expo to give visitors an idea of what to expect. Their blog post provides contact information as well as information about changes in this year’s format. Sounds like a great way to support our ever energetic literary scene while getting some of those early Christmas gifts taken care of.

From the Stationmaster: We’re still “remodeling” & looking for writers

So I’ve been having conversations with some older, more established publications outside of our market trying to resolve some of our technical issues that would allow us to provide additional features to you on the site. I just wanted to take a moment to apologize for the delay in postings in recent days due to these conversations. I’m hoping that as we get more writers posting, delays during these periods will become less common.

For those that may be interested in helping out, we will be having a writers meeting tomorrow evening, July 26, at our offices. We’ll get started at 5:45 p.m.

Green signs looking out at me with a name change at Harbert Plaza

Covered AmSouth-Regions signThe AmSouth to Regions conversion was visually completed this morning with area banking centers switching from the familiar blue and white to the new Regions green. As we reported in May, the complete changeover should be complete by October.
