Birmingham News demolition continues

The long goodbye to The Birmingham News’ former home continues.

This is an image taken earlier today as we learned that the first above street level demolition of the 1917 headquarters was visible.

Crews have been working in recent weeks to remove the sidewalk and dirt from around the foundation of the building, which is being demolished to make way for a surface parking lot. It is unknown when the structure will be completely removed, though based on current progress it could be as soon as the end of the month.

That is so frustrating. Why couldn’t they have just torn down the addition and left the original building standing for…. Oh, i don’t know, a Birmingham/Jeffco History Museum or something.

You should really rename the archives “Old News” and post a picture of the old news building as the header.

Dave, the building actually would require a LOT of work to make it useful. And that work would be very, very expensive. I worked in the old building, and although it is (er, was) beautiful from the outside, inside it was a dungeon.
