Our first mayoral poll for the 2007 campaign closes at 12 p.m. today.
This is the first of several that we’ll conduct involving the race to be the next mayor of Birmingham, Alabama during the summer.
If you haven’t yet, take a few seconds to vote. Just look over to your right as you reach the front page and cast your vote at the information desk area.
We’ll have a new one up this afternoon starting at 12:30 p.m.

To be really honest, I’m not thrilled with any of the listed candidates. I’d be likely to vote for none of them. Sorry.
Actually, I’m more sorry for Birmingham with the slate as listed.

In my opinion, that’s a cop-out. Bell and Smitherman have pretty good credentials. Kincaid is, if nothing else, clear of corruption. Langford is a bottle rocket. Abbott is a tireless servent, and Cooper is slick, smart and savvy. Picking between them should be left to those with a special interest.

Well, let me say that I haven’t taken the time yet to do due diligence on several candidates. The two with the kingmaker’s fingerprints all over them are not to my taste. Langford wants to do something, but has a tendency to jump in the middle and hold onto issues before fully thinking them through. In spite of Cooper’s campaign jumping into the neighborhood e-groups, I won’t vote for him until I can do some more research into him and his platform. Kincaid is ineffective, though indeed, clear of corruption. I probably prefer Abbot.
But this is very premature still. The race doesn’t close for the candidates until September, and the election is in October. I have too much research to do in between now and then to pick a candidate yet. Though I shouldn’t have added that flip comment at the end of my previous post.
I agree that picking between them should not be left to the special interests. Unfortunately it too often seems like the fields are presented by the special interests and we have to choose which one we dislike the least. At least there are a few of the mayoral candidates currently not appearing to be the handpicked candidates of special interests.
