First off, it would be wrong of me not to mention ShamRock, the extravaganzafest happening at Sloss on Saturday in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. I know it’s been covered elsewhere on the site, so I’ll leave it at that. There’s a lot of chaff in the line-up, but you should check out The Bridges. They’ve got some interesting stuff going on. Now, onto the picks:
Thursday 3/13 | ||
Clay Connor and the Criminals @ The Nick |
||
Admission: 5$ | Go Time: 10:00 p.m.
Clay Connor is a regular player in the bar band scene here in Birmingham. These local boys have a good time, they groove, and they have an organ to boot. They’re not gonna change your world, but they make good music to drink to.
Friday 3/14 | ||
Jeff Holmes of The Floating Men @ Workplay
Admission: FREE | Go Time: 8 p.m.
Jeff Holmes is the soul behind long-time Nashville scenesters The Floating Men, and he’s throwing a last minute solo shindig at Workplay. He will most likely play some tunes from their twisted new album Pleasurado, a concept album that chronicles the Requiem for a Dream like downward spiral of a couple of party animals. Sounds delicious to me!
Saturday 3/15 | ||
Ani DiFranco @ Workplay
Admission: $35 | Zero Hour: 8 p.m.
You’ve heard of Ani DiFranco, though you might not know it. Her deftly constructed acoustic folkitude has been pleasing ears world-wide for a long time. Her album Dilate is a personal favorite of mine, though she’s one prolific songstress, and it’s difficult to pick. I know the ticket price is steep, but this one is a must see guys. Get there early and stay there late.
To those about to rock, I salute you!
