How did Birmingham fare on National Signing Day?

While much of the attention today was on who signed at Alabama and Auburn, it’d be silly to forget that there were colleges and universities in the immediate Birmingham metro area that got some commitments as well.

UAB Blazers logoUAB – The first national signing day of the Garrick McGee era seems to have Blazer fans excited. McGee seems committed to his pledge made shortly after he arrived that he’d focus on recruiting in-state; 18 of the 25 student-athletes that signed today are from Alabama. Nine of them are from metro Birmingham.

samford bulldogsSamford – Pat Sullivan’s program signed 18 student-athletes today. The school signed six players from the state of Alabama (and just as many from Florida), with three of them (Ben Tamburello, IIII – Hoover; Jake Wilks – Trussville; Denzel Williams – Columbiana) hailing from the metro area.

Miles College Golden BearsMiles – While the Golden Bears hadn’t officially posted their Signing Day list as of yet (the post will be updated with the link once they do), they did just so happen to share their 2012 football schedule yesterday. This year’s games include a meeting with the University of North Alabama at Legion Field for the sixth annual Golden Labor Day Classic and a homecoming match against Clark Atlanta.

BSC PanthersBSC – It just didn’t feel right to talk about the other institutions today and not mention Birmingham-Southern. Luckily they did have some good news to share with their fans – D3hoops.com has the men’s basketball team ranked No. 11 in the nation. Nice jobs, guys!

Now it’s only a matter of time… until the start of the 2012 college football season.

There’s watching the BCS Championship on a big screen…

2011 BCS Championship logoFrom what we’ve been hearing via various digital outposts, there are no known tickets left for next Monday’s BCS national championship game in Glendale, AZ between Auburn and Oregon. The official word at least is that StubHub doesn’t have any left (or couldn’t guarantee any that are).

What to do? Well, the folks at al.com’s Montgomery bureau have made the best suggestion yet for Auburn or Oregon fans in the region. Those willing to drive over to the Carmike Cinemas Summit 16 at the popular shopping destination on Highway 280 will get a chance to watch the game for free – provided they purchase a concession area combo.

Those who choose to watch the game there should not be complaining about someone blocking their view…

Where do you plan to watch the game (provided the weather cooperates)?

UAB awards scholarship to newborn

Jakaila Humphrey (left) and La'Issac Smith - courtesy UAB News La’Isaac Smith is a pretty lucky newborn. He was selected in a random drawing by the UAB Health System to receive a full, undergraduate tuition scholarship to UAB (which should no doubt come in quite handy when he’s eligible to enroll in 2027). His sister is shown here congratulating him as his parents, Kwanetta Humphrey and Bruce Smith, received the news on Monday afternoon.

La’Issac was the first of five newborns to enjoy the comforts of the new UAB Women and Infants Center when it opened this past Sunday, February 21, providing the back story (via UAB’s News service) for his good fortune. The 430,000 square foot facility is the newest addition to the university’s medical center campus, carrying with it a $164 million price tag.

That translates into a state of the art facility – one that does indeed “…feel more like a first-class hotel than a hospital.” Got a feeling that the patients will appreciate it.

Miles starts local college football season off right

While some folks believe that college football season doesn’t begin until Saturday, there’s a rather large legion of fans in metro Birmingham who’ve already been treated to a victory this year.

Miles College opened their season this past weekend against Lane College with the Golden Bears defeating the Dragons 35-18 in front of the hometown crowd. The Bears will face the Golden Tigers of Tuskegee University (1-0) at Legion Field this Sunday for the Labor Day Golden Classic.
