Rt. Hon. Michael Martin, Birmingham International Center

The speaker of the British House of Commons is scheduled to speak at the Birmingham International Center on May 31.

According to a report from the Montgomery Advertiser, the Rt. Hon. Michael Martin and his wife, Mary, are meeting with lawmakers in the southeastern United States to build additional relationships.

The center’s mission, according to its website, is to promote mutual understanding between cultures. Their hope is to do their part in creating a more open, accepting Alabama.

“Go Tell It!”, Alys Stephens Center

Go Tell It! Celebrating Our Own in Gospel Music! is the first fundraising event aimed at reopening the doors of the former McCoy United Methodist Church as the Alabama Gospel Music Cultural Arts Center.

The facility is located across from the campus of Birmingham Southern College . Plans for the center will be revealed during the event, with proceeds from ticket sales going towards its development. towards development of the center.

“An Evening on Historic 2nd & 3rd Avenues”, Various locations

The stores on 2nd & 3rd Avenues North are joining forces inviting people to come and check out what’s going on downtown. Jim Reed Books , Safari Cup Coffee and the newest addition to the downtown retail scene, What’s On Second, invite everyone to come down and explore their stores, check out some comedy courtesy of our local Fresh Ground Comics , and just relax. With the weather we’ve been having recently, what could be better.

Pepper Place Farmers Market, Pepper Place

The Pepper Place Saturday Market is in its eighth year providing residents with a place to get fresh produce while exploring one of the city’s coolest districts. The market will begin promptly at 7 a.m. and close at noon in the Pepper Place parking lot. According to the event website, new products available include hand carved wooden fruit trays, wind chimes, hand blown glass, hot sauces, pottery, homemade fudge, peanut brittle and ice cream. Activities include cooking demonstrations by some of the region’s best chefs. A chance to meet up with friends and see what Alabama has to offer in terms of produce.

Do Dah Day @ Caldwell & Rhodes Parks

Do Dah Day celebrates 28 years of fun and good causes on May 19. The annual festival, which has raised more than $536,000 since 1992 for Jefferson County animal shelters is one of the city’s most cherished springtime events. Festivities include the annual parade (it starts at 11:01 a.m.) as well as music and fun in Caldwell & Rhodes Parks in Birmingham’s Highland Park neighborhood. They can always use more volunteers for the event as well. Don’t forget about the crowning of the Do Dah Day king and queen on the 18th at Do Dah Eve!

A Night of Legendary Music @ Fair Park Arena

Six of the greatest blues entertainers that have ever lived will be taking the stage on May 11 at 8 p.m. at Fair Park Arena. Those in attendance will be treated to the sounds of Bobby Womack, Betty Wright, Clarence Carter, Millie Jackson, Willie Clayton and Sir Charles Jones.

Tickets are $45 for floor seats and $40 for dress circle and they are currently available at all Ticketmaster locations, Publix Supermarkets, both Music N’ More locations, Beauty Land Beauty Supply in downtown Fairfield, JB’s House of Fashions and Coconuts Movies and Music.

“The Terminal” Writers Interest Meeting @ Metro Bistro

You say you’re interested in writing for The Terminal?! Well, funny you should mention that, since we’re starting to create a staff. We’re looking for people that want to write about what’s going on in Birmingham and those who want to share it with everyone. The plan is to meet at Metro Bistro this evening and go over just how much fun it will be to write for one of Birmingham’s newest online publications. Hopefully we’ll see you there… or may be we’ll at least hear from you if you’re interested.
