The Rhodes lead to Birmingham

While the participants in this story are not tied to Birmingham directly, the results are definitely the type of thing that folks in the Magic City like to be associated with. Steve Kallas’ blog, Kallas Remarks, has a rundown of the details surrounding Florida State safety Myron Rolle‘s predicament – interview here in Birmingham on Saturday to be a Rhodes Scholar, play in Saturday’s game against Maryland, or both (one that speaks to what it means to be a student-athlete, with the emphasis on student, in the ESPN/Internet driven world of sports).

It also may shine a little light on the fact that despite all of the cheering that we do on Saturday mornings, it’s still supposed to be about great individuals like Rolle getting an education, isn’t it?

C.I. Taylor’s name lives on

I’m assuming that there are several who are not familiar with C.I. Taylor. While he was not a Birmingham native, Taylor is responsible for starting and managing The Magic City’s first black professional baseball team, the Birmingham Giants, in 1904 (serving as their first manager until 1909). He also served as one-time vice president of the Negro National League. The annual C.I. Taylor Awards are presented by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum to their choices for managers of the year in the American and National Leagues and were given to the Tampa Bay Rays’ Joe Maddon and the Chicago Cubs’ Lou Piniella yesterday.

Alexander’s back in the NFL

Shaun Alexander 2. mr. l/FlickrCrimson Tide fans now have something else to be cheering about this fall as former Alabama football standout Shaun Alexander has signed a one-year deal with the Washington Redskins. According to the report on ESPN.com, the former Seattle Seahawk will be backing up Clinton Portis while Ladell Betts recovers from a knee injury, expected to take about 3 weeks.

It’s Battle for the Bones time tonight

If you’re so inclined to skip watching the vice presidential debate live or attending any of the numerous networking events this evening, you may want to head on over to Legion Field as UAB prepares to play Memphis, otherwise known as the annual Battle for the Bones contest. They play for The Bones that you see to your left and while it’s too late to register to win some of the more than $3,000 in prizes, there’s still plenty of time to go and enjoy at the very least the smell of all that barbecue.

Birmingham ranks as a sports-obsessed city

That really shouldn’t come as a big surprise to most folks here in Birmingham, AL. We tied with seven other cities for the honor of the 4th most sports obsessed city in the United States. The other folks with that honor of having 62% of their residents as “very interested” in sports according to the Nielsen report: Green Bay/Appleton, WI; Providence/New Bedford, RI; Denver, CO; Rochester, NY; Louisville, KY; Cleveland/Akron, OH; and San Antonio, TX.

So who’s #1? Well, 66% of Columbus, Ohio’s residents are rabid sports fans apparently.

An update for skateboarding fans

We wanted to share a comment that was posted over on Magic City Question by Peter at Faith Skate Supply that gives as good an update as any on the current grassroots push for a local skate park:

“Here is an update on what is going on with our quest. There is an Andy MacDonald skateboard Demo going on at Belk Dept store on Oct. 11? They are building a big ramp for him to skate and have nothing to do with it afterwards. Faith is working with the city to purchase the ramp and donate to the city of Birmingham for a public halfpipe for kids to skate. It will be 5 feet high and 20 feet wide. As of right now, sounds like its going to happen….but we all know how things happen and get messed up. Faith will service the ramp and patrol the area daily too. What ever it takes to show the “higher ups” in Birmingham that there is a huge need for a skatepark.

This is the first step of many. Please cross your fingers and know we need support with this and in the future. Thank you to everyone who has left nice informative comments!”

You can still add your thoughts to the original question over on MCQ.

First of all, the UAB Blazers will start their 2008 season this afternoon at historic Legion Field against Conference USA foe Tulsa – kickoff’s at 3 p.m.

Meanwhile, Miles College held a rally on campus Friday to help get ready for their Battle of 20/59 on Sunday evening at the Old Gray Lady. They’ll be taking on Stillman College starting at 6 p.m.
