Not only is America’s oldest ballpark enjoying some visits from minor league officials this week, it’s also enjoying its recently redesigned website. Head on over to http://www.rickwood.com (yeah, we know it’s not finished yet, but check it out anyway) and see what we mean.

And that’s on top of the park having been the cover story in this month’s Southwest Airlines Spirit magazine. Here’s a link to the article as it exists on the website. Here’s a link to a PDF of the article as well. It’s a nice way for the park to get some attention as an unofficial countdown begins towards its 100th birthday in 2010.

And they’re STILL undefeated

That’s right, the BSC Panthers won their first football game since 1939 against Mississippi College 41-13 at Legion Field on Thursday evening.

Click here for an interactive recap of tonight’s game. (We don’t know how long the stats will be available, so you may want to check soon).

BSC Football: Undefeated since 1939

Bsc Football LogoOf course the main reason that they can say that is because they haven’t played a collegiate athletic association-sanctioned game since then. The streak is in jeopardy this evening when the Birmingham Southern College Panthers begin their 2007 season at 6 p.m. against Mississippi College at historic Legion Field.

There was a great deal of debate when the move from NCAA Division I to Division III athletics was announced; what went unnoticed was the conversation that occurred nationally after that decision was made. One of the more interesting commentaries came from respected sports writer and NPR contributor Frank Deford. Click here to hear Mr. Deford’s commentary filed this winter about some of the unexpected results of the move.

Papa John’s donates $10 million to University of Louisville

You may just wonder why we’d post a link to a story about the University of Louisville receiving a $10 million donation from Papa John’s earlier today, providing additional monies ($22 million total) for Cardinal Stadium (including naming rights) and enabling an expansion and renovation project to move forward.

Well, when you visit that link, take a look at the comment attributed to Papa John’s CEO at the end of the posting and you’ll understand. The PapaJohns.com Bowl is currently hosted at our own Legion Field and is scheduled to be played this year on December 22. This is the first public comment by the title sponsor suggesting that the game might be moved (in this case after renovations to the facility are completed).

Don’t forget about the Kickball charity game tonight!

There seems to be a love affair across the country with kickball and Birmingham is no exception. There are teams that play downtown, folks trying to organize leagues and then there are the folks that started doing this just for the fun of it in Avondale Park.

Well, that crew is playing their second major charity game of the year this evening as the Kickball Allstars, facing the crew from Rojo in Highland Park. The match starts at 7 p.m. at Avondale Park. Continue reading
