UPDATE: New county commissioner to be sworn in at 1:30 p.m.

UPDATE: 1:35 p.m.: George Bowman, a retired Army general from Birmingham has been appointed by Gov. Riley to serve out Larry Langford’s remaining term. Watch the swearing in ceremony on myFoxal.com. He is currently a branch manager for Liberty National. He is the son of one of the original Tuskegee Airmen.

Fox 6 is reporting that Governor Riley has made a decision about who will fill Birmingham mayor Larry Langford’s seat on the Jefferson County Commission. While the name has not been released as of yet, the swearing in ceremony will take place at 1:30 p.m. this afternoon. Fox 6 has stated that they will carry the ceremony on their website.

The seat has been formally vacant since last Tuesday, when Langford took the oath of office to become the mayor of the state’s largest city. The situation may not be finished yet as a special election has already been set for February to fill the seat with a vote from the people. We’ll update this post with a link to the ceremony and the name of the appointment as soon as they become available.

Slow down there. You move to fast.

Not only does Mississippi not fight with us over water, it doesn’t fight with us over traffic either. Our neighbor to the west and Tennessee have joined Alabama in a “Take Back Our Highways” blitz during this Thanksgiving holiday week starting … yesterday. Yes, that’s why you saw a bunch of troopers on the road during your commute. The crackdown continues through Sunday. So we say without apologies, don’t be a “turkey” and get a ticket. Besides, who wants to meet a state trooper upset about missing his grandmother’s pumpkin pie.

Birmingham News staffer Stan Diel provided even more reasons to slow down this week in Monday’s paper.

Hint, be extra careful on the roads today.

YPs make the front page again

Seems like young professionals are on the minds of many as Larry Langford prepares to take his oath of office at noon today at Boutwell Auditorium. This morning’s Birmingham News article contains quotes from several prominent young professionals in our community about their desire to become more involved in The Magic City’s future.

While we figure that folks are tired of seeing this particular group being studied and analyzed, we did it anyway, providing results to our recent issues poll during the second half of last week ranking issues of concern to this demographic. Check it out as well as the comments submitted by participants if you get a chance today.

YP Issues: Question #3: What’s next?

Our first two questions dealt with the issues affecting the city in the eyes of Birmingham area young professionals and what exciting things were giving them hope. The third question asked what would help empower area young professionals. Like we said yesterday, there were not many answers but those that we did get were quite interesting and they should encourage some dialogue, even if not on the pages of this site.

YP Issues: Question #2: What’s right?

After focusing on what they thought was wrong in Birmingham, the second question had our respondents talk about what excites them about The Magic City.

Choose three thing that you feel make Birmingham an exciting place to be right now:

The written comments received for this survey question ranged from focusing on downtown to not really being convinced that there was anything good to begin with.

YP issues: Question #1: What’s wrong?

The first question that our respondents answered in our survey was one that ranked the issues that were most important to them facing the city and the region right now through the eyes of a young professional. The overwhelming issue was image, or the perception of an image problem. Though there was a much more diverse response from those that chose to write additional comments.

Check out some of these comments and then let us know if there’s anything you want to add to the conversation:

Let’s look at some answers…

Late last week, we partnered with YP Now to conduct a survey trying to find out what issues were on the minds of our area’s future leaders. We are happy to report that we received more than 120 responses to the survey.

Beginning this evening we are going to take a closer look at the responses, taking the opportunity to post some of the written comments and asking for your feedback and continued dialogue. You can currently find the full results of the survey on this page.

You will also be able to find the full results of the survey on YP Now (we’ll let you know when they’ve been published to their site).

Stay tuned… the first question gets tackled beginning at 7:30 p.m.
