Library wins award for MySpace Page

BPL MySpace screenshotThe Birmingham Public Library has won an award for its creative use of its MySpace page for marketing their programs and features. The Be Innovative! Award from Innovative Interfaces, the company that markets the software used by the library to organize, order, process, and circulate all of its materials, is the second one presented to the library, the first being presented in 2004.

Permit for former News bldg site to be approved

According to sources familiar with the situation, The Birmingham News may receive a construction permit that would allow for the demolition of its 1917 structure and its replacement with a parking lot as early as this afternoon.

The construction permit for the new surface parking facility at the intersection of 4th Avenue North and 22nd Street North is all that would be needed to allow for the original structure to be taken down and not a demolition permit as has been previously assumed. Continue reading

House refuses to honor Blackledge

The Associated Press is reporting that Alabama House of Representatives tabled a resolution yesterday that would have recognized Birmingham News reporter Brett Blackledge for his winning of a Pulitzer Prize earlier this year.

According to the report, several representatives took the opportunity to openly question Blackledge’s stories. Blackledge won the Prize for his reports on corruption within the state’s two-year college system (the series is still ongoing). Continue reading

Southern Progress launches MyRecipes.com

MyRecipes.com logoCooks of the Magic City (and the country for that matter) rejoice; welcome MyRecipes.com into existence. Birmingham-based Sothern Progress Corporation (SPC) introduced this new site earlier this week (just in time for the holiday weekend) as the first portal from the company’s newest division, SPC Digital. MyRecipes.com launched with more than 25,000 recipes already at users’ fingertips, with more to be added every month. The recipes appear to be taken from several titles that are published by SPC, including Southern Living, Coastal Living, Cooking Light and Health.

Parker High School graduates first white student today

This story has been picked up by regional media; here’s a link to the story as it ran on Jacksonville’s Times-Union site. and it is one of national importance. Monster partners with local newspaper company

Monster Worldwide, Inc., parent company for Monster.com earlier today announced it will partner with Birmingham-based Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc. (CHNI) on developing some 80 career and recruitment sites. The communities that will be served through these sites are already served by more than 140 publications associated with CNHI. CHNI serves as the parent company for some 93 daily newspapers.

The announcement, according to this Reuters story, is the latest such partnership for Monster, having already made similar agreements with various media outlets including the New York Times and The Boston Globe.

Taste of the Nation, McWane Center

The annual event is a program of Share Our Strength, a national organization which is dedicated to fighting hunger in our world. Last year’s event raised $65,000 for Heifer International, Magic City Harvest and Pathways, with this year’s goal being $85,000.

Tickets are available online at www.birminghamtaste.org until noon the day of the event for $75. They will be $85 at the door. According to their website, since 1988 these events have raised nearly $50 million nationally, supporting more than 450 organizations in their efforts to end hunger and poverty. Go on out and do your part to support this important campaign.
