Montgomery’s final word

Joel Montgomery - By Bob Farley/f8photo

City Councilor Joel Montgomery took the opportunity to step to the podium at yesterday’s city council meeting to talk about the recent dropping of charges against him stemming from an incident along Cobb Lane on Birmingham’s Southside in April. He read from a prepared statement and said that reports in the media that stated he would be undergoing counseling as a part of his dismissal. Montgomery repeatedly denied the allegations and said that it would be the last time that he would talk about the incident, but that he wanted his comments in the public record.

Election ’07: The topic tonight is homeless

Our mayoral hopefuls will be gathering in the Arrington Auditorium at the downtown branch of the Birmingham Public Library shortly to participate in a forum about homeless. The event has been organized by the Birmingham Metro Diversity Council. We hope to provide some coverage (once we get there). Check back and find out if we were successful.

As a result, our editorial will be published tomorrow morning.

Election ’07: Let’s do this again

We figured it was time to ask this question again, especially with a larger field of candidates and with some of them providing a better idea of what we’d expect. Visit the front page if you’re reading this on an RSS feed and let us know who you think may be Birmingham’s next mayor. It’s not necessarily scientific, but it may provide a better idea of what people are thinking. The poll closes at 8:59 p.m., this Friday, August 24.

We do intend to begin coverage next week, with some slightly different methods to the traditional madness. Keep an eye out for Andre’s editorial over on my Birmingham this afternoon… In the meantime, what do you think are the real issues of this election? Post your thoughts as a comment to this post.

Frazier Singing - Bob Farley - F8photo.org

We’ve got another finalist vying for a chance to win a reality television show. Jeremy Frazier is one of 10 hoping to win MTV’s Making the Band 4. The series ends with a live finale on August 26 and he needs Birmingham to turn out and vote for him. So go visit the site, register, and vote (you can vote once per day). And don’t forget to pass it on to others. Voting ends at 9:59 p.m. on August 26.

Election ’07:We’re getting a clearer picture

Birmingham City Hall Reflected - Photo By Bob Farley

We’re starting to get a clearer picture of the candidates for mayor (well, we hope that we are). Are we getting a clearer picture of what the issues really are in thisĀ  year’s race and for the city’s future? We’ll start our editorial series over at my Birmingham tomorrow to take a closer look.

Let’s scream for more ice cream

Many may be aware of the fact that Dunkin Brands, the company that has already announced a return of the donut & coffee chain Dunkin Donuts to the Magic City region, also owns Baskin Robbins. The company has also done a great job of pairing the two chains with each other throughout the country.

So one would think it was only a matter of time before we saw this announcement come from the Massachusetts-based company earlier today. If you follow the suggested logic in this Birmingham Business Journal report, could we see one more announcement before too long? We’ll see… In the meantime, you can always try your hand at being a franchisee; the open house is next Tuesday.
