Taj Mahal Trio, Alys Stephens Center

Describe legendary musician Taj Mahal in a word or phrase? Impossible. You could call him a singer, multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, two-time Grammy-winner or world traveler. All accurate titles, yet none convey the soulfulness of Taj’s music. He’s been playing his own distinctive brand of music – folk, jazz, zydeco, gospel, R&B, soul, all layered on top of a solid country blues foundation – for more than 40 years. The show is part of the ASC’s Blues and BBQ fest. Come an hour early for BBQ plates by Dreamland and music by Microwave Dave in the courtyard. The Alys Stephens Center is located on the UAB campus at 1200 10th Ave. South, Birmingham.

Cost: $28-$62, students $10. Food and cash bar extra.

An Evening with Keb’ Mo’, Alys Stephens Center

Multi-Grammy winner Keb’ Mo’ may have been born in LA (no, not Lower Alabama) but he sure knows how to play the Mississippi Delta blues. His influences – from Robert Johnson (who Keb’ recently portrayed in a docu-drama) to Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Browne – can easily be seen in his soulful rhythms and laconic storytelling style. Come an hour early for BBQ plates by Dreamland and music by Microwave Dave in the courtyard. The Alys Stephens Center is located on the UAB campus at 1200 10th Ave. South, Birmingham. The Blues and BBQ Fest continues Sunday night with the Taj Mahal Trio.

Cost: $22-$52, students $10. Food and cash bar extra.

Cost: $50, a portion of which is tax deductible, plus service fees. A wine tasting and food included in ticket cost.

Learn to protect yourself from identity theft this week

There are two opportunities this week to take part in a course that will help protect yourself from identity theft. The Birmingham Police Department announced the courses yesterday, with both opportunities, this evening (November 6) and Thursday, November 8, taking place at the department’s police academy (401 6th Avenue South) beginning at 6:30 p.m.

“It is a goal of the department to educate the public about financial fraud so they will know how to protect themselves, particularly as the holiday season approaches,” said Chief Nunn.

Identity theft is considered the fastest growing type of crime in the nation, so those interested in attending either session should call 205.254.6356 to register. Each class will accommodate 100 people .

UAB employee “wins” saddest cubicle contest

David Gunnell’s CubicleYeah, that’s why we put quotations in the title; I kind of wondered if he’s excited about the award or if he’d rather we not let our readership know about it. David Gunnells’ cubicle was selected over lots of entries to Wired.com. He is now the proud owner of a RoboMan webcam.

Based on his description and the pictures, one could see that the University of Alabama at Birmingham employee was worthy of the prize (though we’re still wondering if he’s really excited or if he’ll be able to trade up to a better cubicle because of the notoriety).

We found out from the guys over at CNET News, though you could just read the account from Wired.com itself, complete with slide shows pictures of all of the other contenders.
