Election ’07: You’ve got no excuse

Not to vote that is. For those that are thinking that since they will not be in town on Election Day that they do not need to worry about having their voices heard, that’s why there’s absentee balloting!

If you are registered and you’re finding it’s going to be iffy whether or not you’re going to be able to get to your voting location on October 9 due to travel, you can cast your vote on the 3rd floor of Birmingham City Hall, between 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. in Conference Room A. You will be able to cast absentee ballots until 5 p.m. this Thursday, October 4.

If you want to hear what some of the candidates have to say about issues and see what else is planned during the last week of the general election for mayor, visit our Election ’07 site.

May we suggest a D?

Domeweb.jpg

It started with a W, but driving around town lately, we’re seeing a lot of Vs and Ss on Birmingham bumpers. V is for Vulcan, the Statue. Rear envy had us drive quickly, but legally, to the Vulcan Park gift shop to purchase our own sticker for 92 cents plus tax. S is for Saban, the Coach. We hope Tommy’s not jealous. Not being on either side of that fence, the S always makes us look twice since it is very similar to the S, the Claus sticker put out by Brookwood Colonial Mall last holiday season. This post would not be complete without mentioning another local sticker – C, the River by the Cahaba River Society. We predict the next initial sticker to be seen around town will be a D, for the Dome.

Birmingham’s got a new Catholic bishop

Baker portraitOr at least he will be officially late this afternoon. Robert Baker will be installed as the bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Birmingham  during a 3 p.m. service at St. Paul’s Cathedral downtown. There will be a procession leading into the church including several dignitaries that are mentioned in this brief over on the Decatur Daily website.

The installation service will also be broadcast live over the EWTN Network who will be airing a rebroadcast of the event on Wednesday evening beginning at 11 p.m. for those that are not able to see it today. Or you could just click here and watch it live on your computer screen.

Take a Moment: Think pink this month

Pink Terminal T

Up above you’ll notice a pink Terminal T. We hope you’re already aware of our black Terminal T-shirt (among others).
Click here to learn about our efforts to support local charities through t-shirt sales. Well, we decided to expand it just a little more for the month of October.

The pink shirts will only be available for the month of October and in addition to the $1 that goes to The Community Kitchens of Birmingham, an additional $1 will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation of North Central Alabama. Spread the word if you can.

Don’t forget about the Race for the Cure coming up on October 13.

Did you think Where’s Waldo? was ever banned?

Well it was. As were several other books mentioned in this post over on the Birmingham Public Library’s blog.

This week is Banned Books Week, so of course the American Library Association has compiled this list of the most challenged books between 1990-2000.

Go ahead and check one out and read it. Or you could always pull it off of your shelf. Smile
