Apparently it’s time for rematch season as the Birmingham Kickball All-Stars have announced that they will be playing a rematch against The Tragic City Rollers.

The game is set to take place on Saturday, November 3 at Avondale Park beginning at 3 p.m. The teams have also announced the charities that they will be playing for; the All-Stars will be playing for the Greater Birmingham Humane Society while the Rollers will be playing for Rape Response, a service of the Crisis Center of Birmingham.

Of course, for a taste of what playing the game is all about, check out this video celebrating the first year of Birmingham Kickball’s existence:

State seeks amateur meteorologists

That’s the word from the state’s chief climatologist, John Christy is trying to accomplish. Tommy Stevenson decided to republish this article from earlier this month to help get the word out on his Tuscaloosa News blog. It gives a much more personalized account of what’s necessary to help the state in its efforts to accurately measure rainfall, though you could also visit the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow Network (yeah, it’s a long title) website, www.cocorah.org, to get more information about the program. They’ve already picked up some folks in the area thanks to a recent Birmingham News article, but they can never have too many people.

Take a moment: Row-a-thon this Saturday

Now I know that I’m taking away some of Christina’s thunder from her Friday morning post about ideas for the weekend, but hear me out. If you don’t plan on being downtown for the pageantry, music and free ice cream that is this year’s Magic City Classic Parade, perhaps you may want to venture on over to Colonial Brookwood Village and help the University of Alabama crew team out in their efforts to raise money for both themselves and the American Heart Association. Their site’s got more information about the event and how you can give. It’s their football team’s off-week, so there’s no real reason to not go, now is there?

Five Guys x 2

Five Guys logoIf you haven’t ventured over to Brookwood Village to try out Five Guys Famous Burgers & Fries, our newest entry into the world of burger joints here in Birmingham, don’t worry about it … soon you’ll have to choose where you want to go.

The chain, which started in Arlington, Va., and is truly famous nationwide, will soon open its second metro Birmingham location at The Pinnacle shopping development in Trussville next to The Loop. The new location could be seen as providing some interesting close competition to the other burger chain that has recently entered the metro Birmingham market, Red Robin. That location, the Colorado-based company’s third in Alabama, opened earlier this year. We’re guessing that time will tell who’s burger reigns supreme.

UPDATED New uniforms for the Barons

If you own anything with the current Birmingham Barons logo, you better hold onto it. The team is holding a press conference today where they will be unveiling a new team logo and uniform for the 2008 season. The Birmingham Business Journal has more information about the unveiling and we will attempt to get information from the team later today.

A quick scan of the MILB.com and MLB.com online shops show that Barons merchandise has already been removed in anticipation of the announcement. But you still have a chance to grab some stuff from the official team online store (at least until it’s gone).

UPDATED: 1:18:58 p.m., The new logos can be seen after the jump.
