Three Alabamians are called “influential” overseas

Britain’s self-proclaimed #1 quality newspaper, The Telegraph, released their annual list of the most influential liberal and conservative persons in American. To be considered for the list, the person must both live and work in the United States. This year’s liberal list includes Congressman Artur Davis (#89); the conservative list includes Birmingham native Condoleezza Rice (#12) and current presidential candidate (and Muscle Schoals native) Fred Thompson (#54).

Stateside accounts of the listings have been quite interesting, including these two stories from The Tuscaloosa News and TimesDaily.com here in Alabama.

Davis, Rice, among most influential Americans, British paper says, The Tuscaloosa News, 11.2.2007

State claims 3 on influential list, TimesDaily.com, 11.4.2007

We’re crunching numbers today

We bet you’re wondering why the site’s even quieter than it has been recently. Well, we’re sure that many of you had no idea that we were conducting a survey about issues that are affecting area young professionals as well as what made them most excited about living in The Magic City. Yeah, we were, in conjunction with YP NOW in preparation for an event tomorrow evening that brings together those young professionals as well as elected, community and business leaders from around the Birmingham metropolitan area.

We’ve heard of several things going on around town and we’re going to try our best to be sure that we cover it all… it’s just going to take us another hour to finish organizing these numbers so they can be presented (at least in raw form) tomorrow evening. We hope you understand… and we will be making sure that you know what the results are as well over the next few days.

Sidewalk Salon, Rojo

Tonight’s topic, Music and Your Film– How Soundtracks Can Make or Break a Scene, will feature local composer Annie Brunson sharing her experiences and wisdom on setting the mood to a film. There will also be a couple of reps from Apple telling you about some of their amazing programs that can help you create your own soundtrack!

For those not familiar with the Salons, they provide an opportunity for Birmingham’s filmmaking community to meet, greet, listen and discuss. According to Sidewalk’s description, “Guest speakers and topics provide a focus to each meeting, while the social environment of Rojo gives friends and colleagues a reason to get together monthly to talk about upcoming projects.” So head on over there!

Birmingham will soon have it’s own modern day mercantile as a recent string of downtown business openings continue. The sign covering the windows of 2320 2nd Avenue North seem to say it all. The business promises sandwiches, antiques, baked goods and home goods among other things (including one more location for free wifi access).

The one sign you can’t read is the one in the door saying that we all need to stop by come mid-November to see what Urban Standard will be like.

The word came down earlier this week that two (2) sections of Corridor X (a.k.a. the future I-22) are scheduled to be opened to the public just in time for the holiday travel season. You can now count on enjoying those 4 lanes of limited highway access to Memphis to Jasper beginning November 14, leaving only 5 more miles to be completed to connect it to I-65.

A road widening project for where the interchange will be installed is already starting, with that final stretch of road to be completed by 2010 according to state transportation officials. The folks in Mississippi seem really excited as evidenced by this story that originally ran in the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal yesterday.
