Take a moment: Let’s help Wes out!

Wes Frazer, an incredible local photographer, has been a staunch (and sometimes vocal) supporter of this site since its inception. If you didn’t click that last link, then you need to check out his stuff on Flickr.

We’re hoping that by sharing this bulletin (after the jump) that was sent out via MySpace profile yesterday by The Bottletree that we can help him get back in the saddle again when the event happens next month: Continue reading

New chapel dedication, Jimmie Hale Mission

The Jimmie Hale Mission’s chapel at the newly relocated Shepura Men’s Center will be named Sunday in honor of its 90-year-old co-founder, Jessie Hale Downs. Her dedication and faith has withstood the tests of time and has helped shape the 63-year-old organization. Executive Director Tony Cooper will kick off the ceremony at 2 p.m. Guests will have the opportunity to hear a testimony from a Mission client whose life has been transformed by the Jimmie Hale Mission ministries.

The former school teacher and her late husband, Jimmie Hale, started the Mission in 1944 as a storefront chapel to help the hungry, hurting and homeless. Jimmie soon passed away leaving his pregnant wife to carry out their vision. This single, working mom ran the Mission until 1990 relying on faith and surviving breast cancer.

The Jimmie Hale Mission is a Christian-based, 501c3 charitable organization that does not receive United Way funding. For more information, call 205-323-5878 or visit www.jimmiehalemission.com.

There are options this weekend

You just need to know where to look. And in a metro area of more than 1 million people, there are some other things going on this weekend that may draw crowds, though probably none as large as The Magic City Classic.

Christina’s got her picks  ready and waiting as usual for you over on Timetable.

Apparently it’s time for rematch season as the Birmingham Kickball All-Stars have announced that they will be playing a rematch against The Tragic City Rollers.

The game is set to take place on Saturday, November 3 at Avondale Park beginning at 3 p.m. The teams have also announced the charities that they will be playing for; the All-Stars will be playing for the Greater Birmingham Humane Society while the Rollers will be playing for Rape Response, a service of the Crisis Center of Birmingham.

Of course, for a taste of what playing the game is all about, check out this video celebrating the first year of Birmingham Kickball’s existence:

5th annual Art in Avondale Park, Avondale Park

This event keeps getting bigger and better. Come to the corner of 41st Street South and 5th Avenue South with the kids for an art-filled day in the park. There will be lots of hands-on activities, pony rides, music and dance, booths full of well-known and emerging artists, and a silent auction featuring work by Larry Langford, Birmingham’s mayor-elect. One of the event’s highlights is the children’s parade at 10:30 a.m. The parade leaves Avondale Elementary and takes a route through Forest Park Village, down 39th Street and into the park. These kids are cute so come cheer them on. The fun continues after 4 when the Avondale Business District opens its doors for an evening Open House Tour featuring food, entertainment, prizes, hayrides and carriage rides. Rain date is October 28. You can find more information and pictures from last year, here.
