There are options this weekend

You just need to know where to look. And in a metro area of more than 1 million people, there are some other things going on this weekend that may draw crowds, though probably none as large as The Magic City Classic.

Christina’s got her picks  ready and waiting as usual for you over on Timetable.

Birmingham News demolition continues

The long goodbye to The Birmingham News’ former home continues.

This is an image taken earlier today as we learned that the first above street level demolition of the 1917 headquarters was visible.

Crews have been working in recent weeks to remove the sidewalk and dirt from around the foundation of the building, which is being demolished to make way for a surface parking lot. It is unknown when the structure will be completely removed, though based on current progress it could be as soon as the end of the month.

Birmingham Noir, downtown

I just found this great site, the BLP blog. And that’s how this came to my attention. Jim Baggett, Birmingham Public Library archivist, is leading nighttime walking tours of notorious downtown historic sites just in time for Halloween. Admission is free but reservations are needed. Contact Baggett at 226-3631 or e-mail jbaggett@bham.lib.al.us. Meet in the atrium of the Central (downtown) Library, 2100 Park Place. The tour will last about one hour. Walking can get you thirsty so there’s a break for refreshments at Safari Cup during the tour.

Ravi and Anoushka Shankar, Alys Stephens Center

Fans of sitarist Ravi Shankar were disappointed when last season’s show was canceled due to injury. But happily, the show was rescheduled for this season. They do expect a sell out so don’t wait too long to get tickets. A few notes on the show from the Alys Stephens Center: “Virtuoso sitarist, composer, and teacher Ravi Shankar is India’s most esteemed musical ambassador. His daughter Anoushka is the only artist in the world to be trained completely by her father.” The ASC is located on the UAB campus at 1200 10th Ave. South.

Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas and Edgar Meyer at Alys Stephens Center

Acclaimed bassist Edgar Meyer, dobro master Jerry Douglas and mandolin virtuoso Sam Bush are all musical icons. Normally, you would have to pay to see each individually but the Alys Stephens Center is saving you time and money by having all three on stage together. Promises to be quite a show. The ASC is located at 1200 10th Ave. South on the campus of UAB.

Cost: $22-$52, students $10

Get Downtown postponed

Yes, it’s been postponed. You wouldn’t want to get swept away in the midst of a storm. This is the second time the event has been canceled. The first time was due to extreme heat back in August. Unlike last time, you won’t have to wait as long for the rescheduled party; the rain date (weather permitting) is next Thursday, Oct. 25.

Election ’07: Langford’s our certified winner, but…

Cooper speaks to press

Larry Langford was officially certified as the winner of the 2007 mayoral race yesterday. Patrick Cooper, as reported about in this morning’s Birmingham News, has announced plans to file this contest of the October 9 election (PDF file).

The image shows Cooper speaking with reporters at a 10 a.m. press conference at his campaign headquarters in downtown Birmingham. He is contending that Langford was not eligible to run for the mayor’s office because he was still residing in Fairfield.

When asked if he would be filing this contest if there was a runoff, Cooper replied that if he knew then what he knows now, he would still be filing the contest.
