Get Rhythm Experience, downtown library

Straight from a great little blog, here’s a fun event — the Get Rhythm Experience — to be held in the atrium of the Birmingham Public Library’s Central location downtown. And what is the Get Rhythm Experience you ask? It is a collaboration of drummers, percussionists and dancers led by John Scalici. If you’ve ever seen a drum circle around town, you’ve seen John Scalici in action. The group will perform original compositions which blend urban voices and sounds with world-beat influenced rhythms from West Africa, the Middle East and Brazil. It’s part of the BPL@Night series.

Election ’08: Obama’s Birmingham office opens Wednesday

There’s already a buzz about it around town – Barack Obama‘s Birmingham field office will be opening on Wednesday with an event at 6:30 p.m. The state’s become a battleground state in the ’08 race and the candidates are starting to ramp up their efforts prior to the primary in February. Obama’s folks are inviting folks to come out and celebrate while listening in/participating on a conference call with his wife Michelle.

The headquarters is located at 1813 4th Ave North on the 2nd floor. It’s being hosted by the campaign’s statewide field director (Sava Berhane) Congressman Artur Davis, Representative Merika Coleman and Senator Quentin Ross. Based on the buzz and email/social networking traffic being seen, it’s probably going to be a big one.

Embellishments holiday concert, Birmingham Museum of Art

Need ideas on how to RING in the holidays? Start with a holiday concert that really does. Organized in October 2001, Embellishments is a civic handbell ensemble based in Birmingham. This group consists of 16 auditioned musicians, directed by Phyllis Kirk. Embellishments plays six+ octaves of Schulmerich Bells, seven octaves of Malmark Chimes, two octaves of Petit and Fritsen bells, and various other instruments. I have no idea what that means, but it sounds impressive. The museum is located at 2000 Eighth Ave. North downtown.

Sixteenth Street/ First Church joint dinner

That was the question being asked by congregates of Sixteenth Street Baptist Church and First United Methodist Church earlier this evening. The two church families gathered at Sixteenth Street for a joint Thanksgiving service.

This was the third year that the two downtown houses of worship gathered together. The congregations take turns visiting each other’s facilities, with the minister from the other church delivering the sermon. This year Rev. John Rutland of First United Methodist Church had the honors.

The image above was taken during the joint Thanksgiving dinner held after the service.
