A new website for Railroad Reservation Park

Just in time for the second groundbreaking ceremony (in early January) for one of the members of the city’s Park-nership, the Friends of the Railroad Reservation District (FoRRD) unveiled its new website earlier this month, designed by Kinetic Communications. FoRRD was recently awarded the privilege to manage the park, which in its first stage will stretch from 14th to 18th Streets South.

Downtown Get Together, Birmingham Museum of Art

Here’s a great chance to learn more about what’s going on in downtown Birmingham! Operation New Birmingham, the Downtown Business Association, Birmingham Beverage Company and the Central City Neighborhood Association have joined forces to present this second ever Get Downtown event.

It’s a great opportunity to meet downtown business owners, managers and residents. This time the fun takes place at the Birmingham Museum of Art and it will give you yet another opportunity to view the Pompeii exhibit.

Ever wondered what it would be like to watch Tuesday’s Birmingham City Council meetings online? Well, you’re about to find out.

The city has announced plans to revamp the website by January 1. Changes will include live streaming of regular council meetings, in addition to allowing viewers to search and replay portions of the meetings on demand and a new web address, http://www.birminghamal.gov (already active and linked to the existing site layout).

The company providing the city with the web tracking technology, Granicus, also provides similar services for cities including Charlotte, NC, Los Angeles, CA, and metro Louisville, KY.

B’ham Peace Project’s 5th Annual MLK Event, Church of the Reconciler

Washington DC-based Hip-Hop Caucus founder Rev. Lennox Yearwood will be the keynote speaker at this year’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Commemoration Celebration event presented by the Birmingham Peace Project. Yearwood, current Caucus CEO, has presented his vision for engaging the hip-hop generation in community-building dialogues. You’ll be entertained and informed through performances by spoken word artist Sharrif Simmons and blues performer Willie King.

Holiday triple feature, Alabama Theatre

It’s just not the holidays without a little “White Christmas” or “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” And while it is fun watching our favorites at home with family and friends, imagine those same favorites on the big screen at the Alabama Theatre! Here’s a great chance to make a new holiday tradition, especially with the kids — especially with today’s triple feature matinee of “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” “Mickey’s Christmas Carol” and “Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town.” The Alabama Theatre is located at 1811 Third Ave. North in downtown Birmingham.

Cost: Tickets are $7 for adults/$6 for senior citizens and children under 12. Available at business office Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. or at the box office one hour before showtime.

With the nation prepared to take a moment to remember those that perished on the day of infamy in 1941, those in Birmingham took a moment to remember those that suffered on 9/11. The National September 11 Memorial & Museum‘s traveling exhibit stopped in The Magic City on December 6. Here bagpipers play at the end of a mid-morning ceremony.
