Yes, the last three BCS championship games were won by teams hailing from the state of Alabama – so there’s a good reason to be paying a lot of attention to them on National Signing Day. It’d be a shame though if we didn’t take a moment and at least acknowledge the institutions in the immediate metro Birmingham area that signed student-athletes on February 1.

It took 15+ months to get the first one in place, but Einstein Bros is now in the metro Birmingham market. Their fans can now rejoice (and wonder if we’ll see more locations elsewhere in the metro area sooner rather than later).
Joe Webb finally got his first NFL start on Tuesday evening – a week after scoring his first NFL touchdown. Even a snowstorm couldn’t prevent the former UAB Blazer from getting this opportunity – against the Philadelphia Eagles.

So former UAB starting quarterback Joe Webb didn’t get to start Monday night’s game for the Minnesota Vikings against the Chicago Bears, but he did get a chance to do the “Birmingham Walk” – though we may never see footage. They cut away after he ran the ball in for his first NFL touchdown in the third quarter.

The UAB Blazers get to host last year’s 2009 NCAA men’s basketball tournament champions – UNC Chapel Hill – and have to beat the Tar Heels to advance in this year’s Postseason NIT Tournament tomorrow at Birmingham’s Bartow Arena.
