Among the parents sampling Birmingham’s civil rights history with 5th grade schoolchildren from Texas was a familiar face: André “3000” Benjamin.
He was with the classmates of his son, Seven, who experienced a first-hand history lesson on the streets of downtown Birmingham the past two days. Erykah Badu, Seven’s mother, was also among the parents who came as part of the annual pilgrimage to Birmingham’s Civil Rights district.
Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford greeted the group of about 45 parents and children, who stopped to eat at Mrs. B’s Soul Food restaurant in the Historic 4th Avenue Business District.
The students, parents and faculty of the Dallas private school will also visit Selma and Montgomery as part of their tour.
