There are a few folks this morning that are enjoying the newest search engine out there, Cuil. Taking its name from an old Irish word meaning knowledge, one reason for the buzz is because it was built by former Google employees.
Compare the results from Google and Cuil for Birmingham, AL. Then let us know what you think.

I would think that my name was unusual enough that I wouldn’t get pictures of some other dude crowding my search results.

Cuil launched before their system was stable enough to support the first-day traffic.
I got a ton of “Page not found” error. Also got several “No Results Found” for common search terms. And most of the search results I DID actually get were from spammers.
Now I know why they are FORMER Google employees.

“Rather than rely on superficial popularity metrics, Cuil searches for and ranks pages based on their content and relevance.”
This is a noble idea. Google’s algorithm tends to favor the big guys on the web: Wikipedia, etc. This makes it a little harder for smaller sites to find an audience.
Of course the big reason Google does this is that it works unbelievably well and finds exactly what I want most of the time. This new Cuil engine pulled up an awful lot of “form pages,” websites that include the same content for every city in an attempt to attract a broad number of searches.
First impression: Cuil sucks.

“Page Not Found”, then “due to unexpected results”.
They will have to step it up to beat Google.

Wait! I got through.
The search results are much more appealing than Google.
It’s a bit slower, but that may change when the server issue is solved.
I am still skeptical - plus a google fan.

Pictures of teeth next to links to maps, radio stations, hotels, and real estate? On first glance, it seems like a jumbled mess.

I’ve been playing around with it this morning and I must say I am not impressed. I do not like the dark color scheme. The results did not give me information as useful as Google’s results. I greatly prefer the linear layout of Google’s results over Cuil’s “magazine style.” I also noticed that many of the pictures were mismatched with results. The main “selling point” point of the website, the number of pages indexed, I believe is deceiving. Just because you index an extra few billion ad, spyware or useless pages does not make your search engine better. I will check back on it periodically but I don’t think Google has anything to worry about for awhile. To sum up my review put it back in the oven ’cause it ain’t done yet.

Not impressed either. Maybe the design is so simple that you have to dig around to find stuff. It’s also hard to beat the plethora of free stuff google has: gmail, calendar, etc etc.

Visit this URL for a good laugh. It would seem that cuil can’t even manage to “cuil” itself!
