Workers remove old cobblestones along Powell Avenue in preparations for the construction of the Railroad Reservation Park. The park is scheduled to take about a year to complete. The stones will be stored and used in the park. The park is one of three that will be focused on during Thursday afternoon’s annual meeting of the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham being held at B&A Warehouse (directly across the street from the bulldozer activity downtown). There will also be an announcement about the foundation’s latest initiative.

Come one and all to the meeting this afternoon. And if you want to hear more about what we are announcing this afternoon, check our website. We were so proud to be part of the successful launch of the new park plans, but we know our community can do even more, as long as we pool our resources and our vision. Maybe I’m partisan, but I’ve seen and heard some great comments lately that make me believe we can do more great things — and do them together. EMILY

I’m excited to see it finished. The plans looked awesome.

Anyone else feeling skeptical about this?
I’ve been waiting to see progress for years now and I’m starting to wonder how many times we need to break ground on this thing before work really begins…
Correct me if I’m wrong. What’s the hold up?

From what I know, the first groundbreaking was a “ceremonial” one to secure county funding. The current one happened to let people know that the project is moving forward.
We’d be more than willing to get an official word to confirm, but having taken part in the focus groups earlier on, the delay was to secure the rest of the land and to prep the land for phase I.

Andre,
Thanks for responding on this one but as a proponent for this park what I’d like to communicate to FORRD is “if you want to let the people know the project is moving forward, MOVE THE PROJECT FORWARD”
I’m not the most patient of people and I’m just having a hard time understanding what the purpose of all the dead time is.
