Lasers Edge announces it’s closing

I’ve been at the Birmingham Diversity Summit for most of the morning, so imagine my surprise when I learned that the Lasers Edge has announced that it’s closing its doors by the end of the year. The Birmingham News breaking news blog has more information about this shock to our local business community.

While we’d normally encourage you to visit their website for more information, but I’m going to lean towards insisting that you go down to the store in downtown Homewood and thank them for what they’ve meant to the local music scene.

According to the News’ post, the store will remain open until 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays but will begin opening at 11 a.m. instead of 10 a.m.

I found out from Shawn Avery on Myspace (I’m about to click the poll). It’s sad when local businesses close, even if you don’t patronize them.

The thing I like about local businesses is that they are unique. Like a mom and pop diner, you could go to an applebee’s and know what you’re going to get or you could take a chance and go on an adventure of taste…… Or something like that. haha.

This is an absolute tragedy for Birmingham. It’s heartbreaking, especially at a time when there is much to be excited about in the local music scene. I was there for the Josh Ritter after-show last night and it was absolutely magical. Knowing that that was the last one of those is pretty hard to take.

Its sad, and that is the way that the music industry is going. Even the big boys like Tower can’t survive anymore. Hopefully the guys from L.E. can morph into something else that helps the music scene.

Lasers Edge closing will leave a gaping hole in the retail music industry. I hate to see yet another great local business with a long tradition of customer service and community support shutting down.
