The rumors of their demise were premature, but only slightly. Black & White reported in their August 9 edition that longtime local favorite Scott’s Koneys was already closed. Well, yesterday was actually the last day for the 30+ year old establishment at its current location. Don’t get too upset though; they do still intend to move into the Liberty National building located at the corner of Richard Arrington, Jr. Blvd. and 3rd Avenue South. The foot traffic outside of the old location was steady today. Thanks to the Bryants of B’ham and our friends at Bhamwiki for the information.
There has not been any significant talk about the relocation of the other businesses on the block. While there are rumors about the Fed Ex/Kinko’s location moving further into the city center, they are still currently occupying the space adjacent to Scott’s now former location. The Birmingham Water Works Board has nearly completed the conversion of a building along 1st Avenue North near the 35th Street Bridge as its new payment center, allowing for their location next to the copy center to be closed as well for eventual redevelopment of the block by Corporate Realty Development. Longtime bookseller Reed Books moved to a new location on 3rd Avenue North (between 20th Street North & Richard Arrington, Jr. Blvd.) about six months ago.
Work has finally started on the mixed use development that led to Scott’s moving.
