August 17 in Birmingham history:
1817: William H. Morris, a founder of the city of Avondale and the third mayor of Birmingham, was born in Troup County, Georgia.
1933: MLB 3rd baseman Jim Davenport, a star for the San Francisco Giants and the namesake of Jim Davenport’s Pizza Palace, was born in Siluria.
1942: Harold Ruttenberg, founder of “Just for Feet” and later the owner of the Copper Grill at Brookwood Village and Crepes Egg-setera at the Summit, was born in Johannesburg, South Africa.
