B’ham represented at Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating conetest

UPDATE: 6:18 p.m., Joey Chestnut wins (eating 66 hot dogs), ending six-year winning streak of Takeru Kobayashi. Simpson tied for 6th with 35 hot dogs.

There’s a chance, by 12 p.m. local time, that we’ll see a new hot dog eating champion. There is a Birmingham representative at the 2007 Nathan’s Hot Dog eating contest today.

Chris "The Phenom" Simpson is representing the Magic City in Coney Island this morning. Simpson finished 6th in last year’s competition.

As we write this, he is currently at 10, putting him in 3rd place. We’ll let you know how he does.

UPDATE: as of 11:50 a.m., 30 hot dogs, 5th place

UPDATE: as of 11:53 a.m., 34 hot dogs, 6th place (unofficial).

    Simpson is from Harrisville, PA but currently lives and works in Birmingham, AL.

    I’m surprised that Kobayashi had entered. End of last month, various news sources reported that he was having extreme jaw pains and had difficulty opening his mouth. (That kid could really pack away though!)
