Three commercial districts served by Main Street Birmingham’s BEACON Program are beginning implementation of a beautification program. Avondale, North Birmingham and Woodlawn have adopted the Blooms for BEACON program, with assistance from MSB and the City of Birmingham’s public works and urban planning departments. The first annuals were planted in Avondale early Tuesday morning.

According to Director of Neighborhood Initiatives Mary Allison Haynie, goals of the program include instilling a sense of community pride and ownership of the district as well as making the district attractive to its visitors, shoppers and investors.

Plans call for the city’s public works department to provide more than 100 annuals on a seasonal basis with volunteers ordering, picking up and maintaining the plants.

The image above shows volunteers in the Woodlawn commercial revitalization district as they are planting begonias in former tree wells. More than 160 plants were placed in sixteen locations throughout the district on Tuesday morning. Volunteers for this planting came from CMC Steel, Tom Crowe, P.A., Debbie Oaks Auto, Metro Appraisals and Professional Drafting Services.

We’ll keep you posted as the other districts have their blooms put in place.
