This week’s issue of Birmingham Weekly should be hitting the street this morning (it’s already online) and it speaks of hope for those wanting to see the historic 1917 building that served as headquarters for The Birmingham News saved.
This news comes as the city prepares to honor preservation in the city. The Birmingham Historical Society presents their 2007 Preservation Awards this evening at the Young & Vann Building on 1st Avenue North.
The following excerpt from the article should sum up the current issue:
In the letter, [Sam] Frazier writes: “[T]he Design Review Committee has not been presented nor has it voted on the direct question of whether to approve the issuance of a demolition permit … I ask that you do not approve an application for a demolition permit for the old Birmingham News Building without it coming before the Design Review Committee.”
The issue of whether or not the demolition of the structure should be allowed to move forward has been a topic of conversation both on and off-line for several weeks now. We published comments made by committee member Cheryl Morgan that were read into the public record at the meeting following the vote to approve demolition that had others. That posting resulted in some interesting comments, making some believe that the issue is far from being settled.
The Weekly’s report stated that a decision will be made before the end of the week with regards to revisiting the item.
