Not a lot of Shelby fans in Michigan

Even with the Treasury Department reportedly sorting through the potential of a automotive bailout package courtesy of the White House, there are apparently a few folks in Michigan who aren’t too pleased with the gentleman representing our state in Washington. Boycott Alabama Now is a website calling for a financial boycott of the state of Alabama to prove a point to U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (although they are saying that they’re not holding a grudge against those of us that work and live here).

Hasn’t this gotten just a little too crazy?

I stand with Shelby. I am in no way a conservative but I didn't like the first bail-out and I'm disgusted that we're about to bail out the Big Three. The only difference is that in this case I understand a little bit about how all this happened. I remember the car companies lobbying hard for CAFE standards not to go up. I remember the disappearance of the EV1 and the total lack of development of any new engine technologies from the Big 3. While the Big 3 were researching rear-view camera displays and cupholder placement and lobbying against sensible fuel efficiency guidelines and carbon caps, Honda and Toyota were building the first mass-production hybrids and researching fuel cells and plug-in hybrids. I have no sympathy for the car companies. They dug their own graves and threw us in with them. They could have been on the forefront of a new trend in green vehicle development. They could have done what they are good at, and made greener cars look sexy and sleek and powerful. Instead we got the Hummer. And the Expedition. Then the H2. And then the Excursion. Then the H3. I feel bad for the workers. I'm sorry that the companies they work for are managed so badly. It's not their fault. But maybe Obama's New Deal will offer them a way to learn a new skill for cheap or free. And hopefully they'll hold on to their benefits. But I think Shelby's right on this one.

One retired auto worker fronts for the web site. (Google: Joe Babiasz) Who is really backing it? "The website is supported by true Americans". Yea? Who? Name yourselves. I note the site calls it a "bridge loan", it's the real "bridge to nowhere." Or at most March. Then what?
