It seems that everybody is concerned with the state of our local bridges after watching the aftermath of the bridge collapse in Minneapolis yesterday afternoon. The numbers of structurally deficient bridges in our state seems to differ depending on who you talk to.
NBC 13 reports that federal stats place approximately 1/8 of our state’s highway bridges have been identified as structurally deficient. Fox 6 went one step further, collecting information from our state’s department of transportation, which has identified about 240 bridges with the classification. They also provided a list of all of those bridges in PDF format on their site. CBS42 decided to bring it’s focus as close as home as possible, interviewing Birmingham city engineers about safety inspections of our local bridges.
