To be honest, I don’t have much for you this weekend. Rightly so, the smart folk have left August alone to let us all stay in the pool or house, wearing as little clothing as allowed. And there is still a little time to head to the beach before school starts. If you are headed to school yourself, or have young’uns who are, then you may enjoy this weekend’s tax-free event<\/strong> to stock up on the needed supplies. Bookbags, clothes, computers all qualify – here are the offical rules<\/a>. I suggest if you hate shopping, then stay the heck away from any big-box store near you.<\/p>\n

Down the street from a new big-box store is Avondale Park<\/strong><\/a>. That’s where I’m parking myself all day Saturday for the Birmingham Folk Festival<\/a><\/strong>. And I’m dragging family and friends along too. I especially want to hear the Kudzu String Band<\/a><\/strong> and The New Familiars<\/a><\/strong>. And I’ll be rocking out\u00a0in the Pink House drum circles too. Music, vendors, kid activities – I love festivals and I love them even more when they’re in my backyard. Tickets are $15, children under 10 free. First act slated to start at 9 a.m., last act 9 p.m. Like I said,\u00a0ALL DAY\u00a0Saturday.<\/p>\n

Saturday night, if the Def Leppard concert out at Oak Mountain gets you yearning to be a rock star, head to the Speakeasy for Rock U Live Metal Karaoke<\/a><\/strong>. I’ve seen karaoke done with a live band and I think it’s pretty cool. And if you check out their website, you can print a 2 for 1 cover coupon. Don’t worry if you can’t sing drunk,\u00a0your drunk friends will\u00a0only hear you rocking.
