So, if you read this column of mine regularly you have probably figured out that I like outdoor music concerts. Yes, I would like them better without the humidity and bugs, but that doesn’t keep me from going. <\/a>This Friday night <\/strong>the music will be playing at Aldridge Botanical Gardens<\/a><\/strong>. Starring in this edition of their Concert in the Gardens<\/em><\/strong><\/a> series is Cleve Eaton<\/a><\/strong> and the Alabama All-Stars. The sweet sounds of jazz will start at 7:30. Cost is $10 for non-members. If you haven’t checked out Aldridge yet, it’s not a bad little spot in Hoover. Once inside, it’s very easy to forget you are<\/em> in Hoover. Normally, you do not have to pay to get in.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Ever since I went to Jamaica for a dear friend’s wedding, I’m all about it. I loved the people I met, the food, the music \u2014 just everything. So I was excited to hear about the inaugural JerkFest<\/a>, presented by the Caribbean Heritage Reggae Festival<\/strong> on Saturday<\/strong> at the corner of 18th<\/sup> Street and First Avenue South<\/a>. The celebration of Caribbean culture will feature music, a Jamaican jerk chicken cook-off and more. Best part, this family-friendly event is FREE. Apparently, the actual local Caribbean Heritage Reggae Festival is in October. I’ll just consider this weekend’s event a taste of what’s to come later in the year.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Oh sure they look all sweet and innocent off the rink. But I’m not going to piss off any of our local roller derby girls, the Tragic City Rollers<\/a>. I know they can kick my ass. And while I want to stay safe myself, I have no problem cheering for the home team Saturday night <\/strong>as they kick the ass of the visiting Memphis Roller Derby<\/a> team. And I can do it while enjoying an adult beverage. Check out the gals in their new venue, the Zamora Shrine Temple<\/a> (3521 Ratliff Road, Irondale<\/a>). Tickets are $10 on online, $12 at the door, cash only. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the bout starting at 7. While kids 8 and under are FREE, and they say the intermission performance \u2014 Pink Box Burlesque<\/a> \u2014 is family friendly, I’m not taking the little one.<\/p>\n
