My particular problem is that I buy too many books, mainly for my son. Until I find a 12-step program, I’ll just have to keep hitting the thrift stores, used book stores and my favorite … library book sales. Give me some credit. I’ve at least figured out the cheapest ways to feed my addiction. This weekend you can find me pawing through the selection at the Emmet O’Neal Library<\/a> in Mountain Brook. Last year I scored three first-edition Martha Stewart cookbooks and the campy “Let’s Make Rabbits”<\/a> by Leo Lionni. The book sale is Friday and Saturday from 10-5 and Sunday from 1-4. Happy hunting.<\/p>\n

The total lunar eclipse<\/a> Wednesday night might put you in the mood to look heavenly more often. You may be surprised to learn we’ve got a planetarium here in town at Birmingham-Southern. I keep forgetting so it’s always a pleasant surprise for me. Once a month they host a public showing which happens to be this Saturday. This month’s show is “Sky Watchers of Ancient Mexico.” Learn about the astronomical discoveries of the Aztec and Mayan civilizations and a little about our own sky too. Show starts at 2 p.m. Cost is $2 for adults and $1 for children. The Robert R. Meyer Planetarium<\/a> is located at 900 Arkadelphia Road.<\/p>\n

This weekend Birmingham Festival Theatre<\/a> is putting on a special show, “Elegies for Angles, Punks and Raging Queens.” It’s described as a “collection of poems and songs that reflects the lives of people who have died of AIDS.” More than that, the show puts a face on AIDS that may be a lot different that what you think. Challenge your mind, support local theater and, with this show, support Birmingham AIDS Outreach<\/a>. The not-for-profit’s mission is to provide support services and education to those with HIV and AIDS. Tickets are $30 and a portion of sales goes to BAO.
