\"Laurel,<\/a>While Laurel Mills<\/a> and Michelle Hyde<\/a> collaborated on their first children\u2019s book \u2013 the whimsical bedtime lullaby Night Night Birmingham<\/a> \u2013 they fretted a little about how it would be received by members of its target audience.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat if Maddie didn\u2019t like it?\u201d she said. \u201cI hesitated to show it to her at first. She\u2019s shut down some really good books.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mills had similar concerns about her four-year-old cousin. \u201cHe\u2019s very straightforward with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

They needn\u2019t have worried. Reviews from children have been overwhelmingly favorable, and they haven\u2019t been bad from parents, either.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s great,\u201d said Hyde, whose vivid illustrations complement Mills\u2019 concise rhyming text. \u201cPeople are excited about it. There\u2019s been a lot of support. Birmingham is really nice.\u201d<\/p>\n

The support may reflect Mills\u2019 and Hyde\u2019s love for the Magic City. Mills is a third generation Birmingham resident who returned to her hometown after spending time in Chicago and Washington, D.C., while Hyde relocated here from Pennsylvania. They first worked together at the now-defunct Lipstick magazine and developed the idea for Night Night Birmingham after Hyde received a children\u2019s book about the landmarks of Philadelphia as a baby shower gift.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was nothing like it in the Birmingham market,\u201d Mills said. \u201cSo we chose to highlight places that are iconic to Birmingham, places kids would either recognize because they\u2019ve been there or want to go to after seeing Michelle\u2019s drawings.\u201d<\/p>\n

Published in August, the book is available throughout metro Birmingham. A full list of locations is available on their website,\u00a0www.mynightnight.com<\/a><\/span><\/span>. Mills and Hyde recommend it as a holiday gift.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor people visiting Birmingham, it can give you everything you did in book form. You can relive memories of your trip through the book,\u201d Mills said. \u201cGrandparents are telling us they like it for their grandchildren who live far away. Through the book, the kids can remember what they did at grandma and grandpa\u2019s. And it\u2019s great to help children who live here learn about their hometown. Kids want to be proud of where they\u2019re from.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope it comes through a lot in the book how much we both love this city,\u201d Hyde said. \u201cThe South doesn\u2019t always have the brightest of lights shining on it, and we\u2019re proud of the way we can show off Birmingham through the book.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"\"<\/a>
