Local kids do Letterman

For all 3 of you who haven’t heard…

As we posted earlier, Wild Sweet Orange is playing The Late Show with Dave Letterman tonight (CBS 42 at 10:30 p.m., CST). If you want to brush up on your Preston, Chip, Taylor and Garrett fix, head on over to the official website or stream it from their MySpace.

Whitney’s Weekend Music Fodder

Since it’s Friday, it’s as good excuse as any to write about “music news” in a very general sense.

Really though, it’s going to be a lot of me typing “OMG! Guess what _______ just ____ on _________?!”.

Hang in there, it might pay off by adding to your anti-boredom arsenal.

First talking/blogging/reading/paying attention point: RELEASES (or at least the talk surrounding them).  Oasis, Franz Ferdinand and U2 have all been working on new material in the form of LPs. October, January, and “later this year” respectively is when we can expect to sample the goods.  In U2’s case however, a reissue of their 3 first full-length albums are in order as well, to be released on July 22. Anyone else reminiscing about the Birmingham U2 tour stop for Zooropa? Okay, yes I was 9 and that was more like my parents leaving me at home while they got to see it… but still! Joshua Tree carpool music for life! Also, I heard Franz got picked up for the Madden ’09 soundtrack. That’d be a nice accent to the hours of video-game related obsession I’ll have to endure from my boyfriend; a soundtrack to my boredom, if you will.

In “everyone feel sad for me” news, Ratatat is touring for their new release, LP3, and guess what Birmingham, Alabama city they’re not playing in? I KNOW, RIGHT?! Check out their music here. Also, Pitchfork posted the MP3/video for their single “Mirando“. Fans of Cut Copy, Of Montreal, MGMT and LCD Soundsystem will enjoy it.

Finally, Stars has posted a video on Myspace from their album “In Our Bedroom After the War” featuring their single “Bitches in Tokyo“. There is so much hipster vernacular before the performance even begins in this video that I do believe Birmingham just gained some scene points. Or ten thousand. They’re Canadian and are full of Lou Reed/New York Dolls references, so that’s even better. I loved this album. Though it’s not in high rotation right now, I was OBSESSED for a good month or two and this video is just another reason to draw more people into my affinity for the band Stars.

Hopefully this enhanced 1 or 2 iPods/hard drives in the metro area long enough to make it through another scalding hot end to the workweek.  So, I’m going to play Rock Band and you’re going to check out the Timetable for what your social calendar looks like this weekend. I know, I know… you’re welcome!

Where do we begin?

Here at the IN headquarters, we are wrapping up our nominations for IN spots. It has been so much fun to read all of your responses. More than 3,000 nominations have come in, and we still are picking more up from the IN boxes from around town.

Personally, I have really enjoyed hearing the positive feedback people have about the city. Everyone knows we have challenges, but I love knowing that we also have so many favorite IN spots to choose from.

Without further ado, I’ll begin leaking the chosen IN spots. Drumrollllll…..

And this week’s IN spot is….

Got plans this weekend? 6.27 – 6.29

So, if you read this column of mine regularly you have probably figured out that I like outdoor music concerts. Yes, I would like them better without the humidity and bugs, but that doesn’t keep me from going. This Friday night the music will be playing at Aldridge Botanical Gardens. Starring in this edition of their Concert in the Gardens series is Cleve Eaton and the Alabama All-Stars. The sweet sounds of jazz will start at 7:30. Cost is $10 for non-members. If you haven’t checked out Aldridge yet, it’s not a bad little spot in Hoover. Once inside, it’s very easy to forget you are in Hoover. Normally, you do not have to pay to get in.

Reminder, you can help out Ruffner Mountain Friday at Java and Jams. Read more about this event featuring the Terminal’s own Bob Farley, here.

Got plans this weekend? 6.20-6.22

So besides giving us a great look at art in the Magic City, Charles has pretty much written my Got Plans? column on his personal blog, Pop Goes the City. And after a pretty-please-with-a-cherry-on-top, he’s going to let me share the info with you. It’s a good thing Charles found some stuff to do because the weekend was looking a little bleak. But what am I saying — there’s always something to do in B’ham. Sometimes, you just have to ask your friends.

And we are your friends here at The Terminal. We look out for you. Tell you the news, cool stuff, etc. So let’s get on with it already …

In Love With: Art in Plain Sight

Birmingham is not often considered a hot spot for public art, but perhaps we need to take a closer look. Throughout the city, you can find art out in the open—maybe even along the streets you travel every day—representing a kaleidoscope of styles. Here are a few of my favorites, along with the locations so that you can spot them the next time you drive by.

Got plans this weekend? 6.13 – 6.15

Yea! City Stages is finally here. Oh, there are lots of folks that I’ve heard complaining about this or that. But I’m ready to enjoy the atmosphere, listen to some good music and have a much better time than the haters. I’ve made my game plan, figured what stages I need to be when — I even know what I’m eating. Here’s my Top Five must-dos for the weekend.

Lunch concert. If you work downtown, start your City Stages weekend off by eating lunch alfresco in Linn Park. This year’s Coca-Cola Unplugged Stage will feature L’Angelus, Billy Bacon and the Forbidden Pigs, and Erin McCarley. Just a little something to wet your appetite. Editor’s note: No, our special section is not quite finished (not even close actually, but at least it can help you for lunchtime.

Got plans this weekend? 6.6 – 6.8

My interest happen to be wide and varied. So are this weekend’s highlighted events.

I don’t think those who know me are one bit surprised by my like of musicals, especially Andrew Lloyd Webber. In town at the BJCC this weekend is Jesus Christ Superstar starring Ted Neeley. This is a role Ted knows very, very well because he was the first Jesus (1971 on Broadway) and has starred in most of the national tours/productions since then. Although I bet you can’t name the the 1980s rock star who took a stab at the role in 2002. This tour was originally billed as the Ted Neeley farewell tour. I’ve seen Ted a couple of time on the stage and he’s worth seeing if that is indeed true. If you can’t catch the show or feel the need to keep your love of musicals in the closest, I encourage you to rent the movie version for a great performance by my favorite Jesus. You know, besides the real guy … George Burns.

I still love me some festivals, here’s a sampling …

In Love With: Being Cool

Water Jet. Clearly Ambliguous/FlickrWelcome to summer in Alabama. That means a heaping helping of heat, topped with a thick slab of humidity. If you’re lucky, you’ll feel a breeze. If you’re really lucky, that breeze will not be oven temperature.

When your air conditioner won’t crank up any higher—and when the neighbors finally turn off the sprinkler you’ve been running through—it’s time to find some cool escapes in the city. Follow the jump to check out a few favorites:
