FRIDAY Check out the opening reception at What’s on 2nd? for the exhibit “Lyrics of Color” by Java Lewis. Before the birth of my wonderful kid, I could frequent bars more often. At one of my favorite bars in town, Metro Bistro, I bought a few beers for Java. I like his stuff. I can’t wait to see what’s in the exhibit. The reception is from 5:30-9 p.m. You can find the store at 2306 2nd Ave. North. Tim Hollis, author of “Vintage Birmingham Signs” will also be present, ready to dedicate a book to you. Book and art will cost you, but it’s FREE to look.

More info about a new event in Avondale Park on Saturday after the jump…

SATURDAY Sure, it’s Do Dah Day. Rhodes and Caldwell park will be full of cute puppies and music. It’s a must-do on my calendar every year. But when I’m ready for a break from the barking, I’m heading over to Avondale Park. The Art in Avondale Park folks are hosting a mini-version of their fall fest complete with live jazz music by N’Fusion and hands-on activities. Avondale Park is located at the intersection of 5th Avenue South and 41st Street South. The ARTventure is from noon to 5 p.m. And like Do Dah Day, it’s FREE too.

SUNDAY Because I can’t let you spend a dime this weekend, I’ve got a FREE concert to tell you about. Pack your lawn chairs and a cooler and head to Phelan Park in Southside Sunday afternoon. The Magic City Blues Society brings Jason Ricci and New Blood to the corner of 14th Avenue and 15th Street South. Just look for Dreamland and you’re in the right place. The show is from 3-6 p.m.

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE. Just like a good infomercial host, I’m going to offer you a bonus event for reading all the way to the end. Hit the Speakeasy Saturday night to give your money to the Tragic City Rollers. The ladies of the rink are raising funds for a trip across the pond to the other Birmingham. In return for your support, you can play bingo to win some nice prizes. B33. BINGO
