Got plans this weekend? 2.29 – 3.2
Goodness there’s a lot going on this weekend! It’s like everyone planning events looked at their calendars at the end of last year and all decided that March 1 would be the perfect day for their fundraiser/yak auction/open house. What, did they think Spring would be here and we’re all inching to ditch the cabin fever? Well, that’s kind of true but I wish it was a little warmer.

In Love With: Mid-century Modern
The Parliament House may be gone, but its swinging ‘60s spirit lives on just over Red Mountain. That’s where you’ll find Office Park, probably the greatest concentration of mid-century modern architecture in the Birmingham area.
You know mid-century modern architecture, with its sleek lines, cool facades, and prominent use of glass and metal. It can be beautiful (such as in the Parliament House’s circular lobby with the floating staircase) or hideous, and while that modern look was a dominant architectural style nationwide in the 1950s and 60s, Birmingham doesn’t seem to be teeming with examples from that era—except at Office Park.

Tonight try your hand at painting. Jennifer Harwell Art is hosting a Valentine Paint Party complete with heavy hors d’oeuvres catered by Tria paired with a selection of Tria’s finest wines. I didn’t get out to see many shows last weekend, what with watching my father run until his legs almost fell off. I did catch The Fiery Furnaces, who were everything I had hoped they would be. How was your weekend? I can’t hear you, you’re on the other side of the screen from me.

Salvador films music video along Morris Ave. downtown

Wind chills in the upper teens did not stop Austin, TX-based Latin-funk band Salvador from taking to the streets of Birmingham, Alabama to film their new music video this morning. The crews were still setting up late this morning as members of the Christian funk band began to tape segments near Zen, housed in the former location of The Station while looking just a little cold. There was no word as to how long the band would be filming today along Morris Avenue.
