The Terminal: Ten Years Later
I’m going to take a leaping wild guess here and say that the readership of the Terminal is no stranger to “Pinched Wallet Syndrome.” I’ve discovered that Birmingham has an amazing wealth of free stuff to do, and depending on your taste, even free food that can be had (grazing at Whole Foods, anyone?). But there’s a special niche I’ve discovered of “Things That Should Cost More, But Don’t,” if you know where to look. I’m in love with three things that allow me to live like a Hilton, even when I’m closer to Motel 8 material: the tamarind margarita at Sol Y Luna in Lakeview, At Home in downtown Homewood, and the lobster cakes at V. Richard’s in Forest Park.

In Love With: Symphony in the Key of AL
Sometimes, what a person needs to feel right with the world is a little class, even if you have to fake it. I get my class courtesy of my friend Amanda, who works in the offices of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra (ASO). She knows I’m a classical music lover who never actually gets around to seeing the symphony unless someone hands me tickets. She has volunteered me for service (with the promise of sneaking in the back of the theater later) a few times now, and it’s thanks to her that I’ve been to as many ASO events as I have this year. So this week’s list is my three favorite things about the ASO: people watching, Maestro Justin Brown, and the recent New Year’s concert at the Alabama Theatre.

Got plans this weekend? 1.25 – 1.27
We’ve already told you about two chances to see presidential hopefuls Huckabee and Obama on Saturday and Sunday respectively. If it turns out you pick the right one to attend, you’ll be telling your grandkids you witnessed history being made. I personally don’t care who you are supporting. All I ask is that you do some research, pick the one you like and vote. No complaining allowed if you don’t vote. Your first chance is in the Alabama primary, Feb. 5.

Looking through the lens of Birmingham books
Special to The Terminal.
It is no secret that Birmingham’s history is one filled with infamous people and colorful events. It’s also one that has been well documented in the pages of books. But books don’t always survive the decades and the ones that do often find themselves buried in the back of used bookstores or hidden away in a grandmother’s attic, until some kind soul stumbles upon these lost books, reads them. Plucking gems of local history from their pages. This a process that Birmingham-area native John Morse knows something about.

Got plans this weekend? 1.18 – 1.20
Oh my goodness! Did you hear the S-word on last night’s evening news? It’s causing quite a stir … and long lines at the grocery store. I’ve already got my milk, bread and beer so I’m ready for what I’m calling the “2008 Birmingham Snow Event.” The blogging folks at ABC 33/40 have a snow projection map. Let’s just say, I’ll believe it when I see snow angels. Since all the weather guys do act like the “2008 Birmingham Snow Event” is a sure thing Friday night late into Saturday afternoon give or take, you might want to check your pantries too and gather up the necessary supplies. My cold weather tip is to open your kitchen and bath cabinets (especially those on outside walls) to help the pipes stay warm. And if you let the faucets drip, put a cup or pitcher under to catch the water for any plants you have inside/outside. Despite any wet stuff falling from the sky, we’re still in a drought.
While I think the “2008 BSE” calls for hibernation under down comforters, some of you many want to leave the house the rest of the weekend and dance, dance, dance.

r3vrb Profile: Sons of Roswell
Some days I wish I’d been born a few decades earlier. There was a time when you could turn on the radio and hear excellent music from all walks, instead of the focus-grouped crapola that gets shoveled through the airwaves these days. Now, unless you want to consume what’s being spoonfed to you, it is necessary to go out into the world and search out the good stuff yourself. Thank the lizard for the internet. Allow me to point you in the direction of Sons of Roswell, fellow searchers.
These four fellas from Muscle Shoals play the best authentic rock music I’ve heard in a long time. They’ve got power and attitude to spare. Formed in 2005 in the sweat-soaked interior of an auto-body shop, Sons of Roswell have quickly become one of the rising stars of today’s rock n’ roll scene. With a comfortably classic sound that’s also got a fresh taste to it, they’ve been storming down doors in the South East, and people are beginning to take notice. They were Coke’s “Artist of the Month” last year, though they didn’t receive any free cokes. What’s up with that Coca-Cola? The least you can do is keep your bands caffeinated! They’re currently engaged in a regional tour, and will be stopping in Birmingham a few times. I got their self-titled LP at a Bottletree show a few weeks ago, and I don’t foresee removing it from constant rotation any time soon.

A Genesis Found holding casting call in Birmingham
Wonder Mill Films has announced that they’re going to hold auditions for their new feature film, A Genesis Found, in Birmingham on February 9 at 1 p.m. Auditions will take place on UAB’s campus in their theatre department (700 13th Street South), with the Huntsville-based production looking for all ethnicities, men and women, ages 17 – 70.
The blog for the production provides more information about this narrative adventure/mystery which “…focuses on a young archeology student’s confrontation of his family’s legacy, responsibility, and faith.” Filming will take place in northern and central Alabama.
