Two recent studies of traffic data for the metro Birmingham area reveal numbers that really shouldn’t surprise anyone when it comes to their commute time. It gets interesting when paired with data about drunk driving and a recent post about our region’s household incomes.

This year the folks at CommuteSmart are mixing it up – sort of. They’re basically still asking you to Bike to Work on May 10, though the actual group ride and festivities won’t take place until the end of the day. Sounds like a good compromise (and it’s supposed to be gorgeous).

A linguist has determined that much of the state of Alabama speaks with a Lowland Southern dialect. Don’t worry, he’s identified the speech patterns of most of North America too.
Despite what you may think, the Highway 280 Super Target location is within the city limits of Birmingham, AL. (one of five currently located in the metropolitan area). The news coming out of Homewood today though may give Magic City residents a shorter drive to get what they need.

Some may have discovered this Google Earth application. For those that haven’t, this will give you a good idea of just how large the Deepwater oil spill is – in this case in relation to Birmingham and the rest of central Alabama.
