You don’t really have to click through. It just made sense after writing about the new ballpark yesterday that we’d report the final score of the first game at Birmingham’s Regions Field. The Barons beat the Mississippi Braves, 9-5, in front of 8,505 fans.

It’ll be a few weeks before everything’s finished and the next project is underway, but Regions Field and the Birmingham Barons appear ready for their closeup this evening as the eyes of the baseball world shift to Alabama’s Magic City.
There are a lot of folks who occasionally decide they want to drive by Regions Field and watch as it rises quickly alongside Railroad Park. The next month might give them a reason to drive all the way around the project as construction closes 14th St. between 1st and 3rd Aves. S.

Birmingham, AL has been hoping beyond hope that the USFL would put a team here this coming spring. A Google+ Hangout held Thursday may get folks to start asking more appropriate questions & remind us we’ll now be waiting until at least 2014.

Back in May we learned a reimagined USFL was considering Birmingham, AL as one of the eight cities it wants involved in its 2013 inaugural season. Monday evening, July 16, their CEO will present what could be to those interested via radio (while the UFL attempts a relaunch of its own).
