Be careful if you’re trying to get around in Five Points South this evening. A few blocks of the popular bohemian district in Birmingham’s Southside have been temporarily fenced off to vehicular traffic.

Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford and city public works employees were spotted putting the final touches on the district’s recent street and lamp post renovation project earlier today.

Langford was seen being carted around by Birmingham police surveying the paving of 20th Street South. The work can be seen from 10th Avenue at 20th Street South up to Highland Avenue and includes parts of 11th Avenue, Magnolia Avenue, with the intersection being painted a bright red in preparation for the merchant association’s logo to be inserted.

After being accused of being a too much of a dreamer and scoffed at about his lofty plans for Olympic glory, Langford may have taken a step in the right direction with smaller but more visible projects like this. Let’s hope this strategy continues in the upcoming months.
