Plant dig, New Georgia Landfill

Picture it: There you are in the woods. Armed, you spot your prey and move closer to claim your trophy — a wild azalea. Or maybe an oakleaf hydrangea or another native plant that would look great in your lawn. You can hunt for all kinds of greenery during the annual plant dig at the New Georgia Landfill, 2800 47th Ave. North. The address is Birmingham but it’s closer to Fultondale. Best part, anything you take home is FREE. But dress for rough terrain (briars) and come prepared with your own water, shovel, wheelbarrow, rope and whatever else you think you might need to get your prize home. Happy hunting.

The Birmingham Rocket Boys use part of the landfill as a launch pad and have a map on their Web site. It looks like you can take either exit 264 or 266 off 1-65. Or turn onto 47th Ave. North straight from Highway 31. If we offer any more direction that that, we’re just going to get you lost.

If you want to know more, call the folks at the Keep Birmingham Beautiful Commission at 787-5222.
